Profession Radio and television host

Edgar Ubalde Ilarde (born August 25, 1934, died August 4, 2020) was a famous Filipino radio and TV host. He hosted popular shows like Kahapon Lamang, Student Canteen, and Darigold Jamboree.

Besides his media career, he was also a public servant. He started as a councilor in Pasay in the early 1960s. Later, he was elected as a Senator and also served as a congressman. He was also an Assemblyman in the Interim Batasang Pambansa.

Early Life and Education

Edgar Ilarde was born in Iriga, Camarines Sur. After finishing high school, he moved to Manila. To support himself while studying, he worked as a bootblack and sold newspapers. He earned his bachelor's degree in journalism from Far Eastern University.

A Star in Media

While still in college, Edgar Ilarde won an oratorical contest. This caught the attention of a radio executive. Soon, he began working at different radio stations in Manila. By the 1950s, he became one of the most popular radio hosts.

His shows were aired on stations like DZBB, DZRH, and the Lopez-owned DZXL. From his advice program Kahapon Lamang, famous phrases like Dear Kuya Eddie and Napakasakit, Kuya Eddie became popular. The phrase "Napakasakit, Kuya Eddie" even became the title of a theme song.

Ilarde also co-hosted the noontime variety show Student Canteen on DZXL with Bobby Ledesma and Leila Benitez. This show later moved to television in 1958, and they continued to host it.

Public Service Career

Edgar Ilarde entered politics in 1963. He was first elected as a councilor in Pasay. Just two years later, he ran as an independent candidate for the House of Representatives. He won against the current congressman, Rufino Antonio. He represented Rizal's 1st district, which included areas now part of Metro Manila. During his time in the 6th Congress, he led the Committee on Fishing Industries.

Even as an independent, Ilarde often agreed with the Liberal Party. They included him in their list of candidates for the 1969 elections for the Senate. However, President Ferdinand Marcos and his party won, and Ilarde did not get enough votes for the Senate.

Since he had left his House seat to run for the Senate, Ilarde ran again for the Senate in the 1971 elections under the Liberal Party. Sadly, he and other party members were injured in a bombing at Plaza Miranda during their final political rally.

While recovering from his injuries, Ilarde and five of his party-mates were elected to the Senate. He became a Senator in the 7th Congress in January 1972. However, his term was cut short. In September 1972, martial law was declared by President Marcos, and Congress was closed.

By 1978, Ilarde had become an ally of President Marcos. He ran under Marcos's political party, Kilusang Bagong Lipunan (New Society Movement). He was elected as an Assemblyman for Region IV (Metro Manila) in the Interim Batasang Pambansa. He served until 1984. During this time, he became known for suggesting that the country be renamed "Maharlika." He continued to support this idea throughout his life.

Later Years and Legacy

In 2004, Ilarde ran for a Senate seat again as an independent candidate. He placed 33rd out of 48 candidates.

He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the PMPC Star Awards for Television.

Edgar Ilarde founded and chaired the Maharlika Foundation For National Transformation Inc. He also founded the Golden Eagles Society International Inc., an organization for senior citizens in the Philippines. He continued to host his radio program Kahapon Lamang on DZBB every Saturday.

Death

Edgar Ilarde passed away on August 4, 2020, at his home in Makati. He was 85 years old, just three weeks before his 86th birthday. His family confirmed that he died of natural causes and that his death was not related to the COVID-19 pandemic. His remains were cremated and inurned at the National Shrine of the Sacred Heart in Makati. His death happened four months after his original Student Canteen co-host, Leila Benitez-McCollum, also passed away.
