Edward Joseph McGuire (born 29 October 1964) is a very well-known Australian television and radio presenter. He is also a sports commentator and a former TV executive. You might know him from hosting popular TV shows like Millionaire Hot Seat on Channel Nine. He also hosts Footy Classified and covers the Melbourne Cup Carnival for Network 10.
Eddie McGuire was also the president of the Collingwood Football Club for many years. He stepped down in 2021. Throughout his career, he has worked in sports journalism and broadcasting. He has also been a popular game show host.

About Eddie McGuire
Early life and education
Eddie McGuire was born on 29 October 1964. He was one of four children. His parents, Edward McGuire Snr. and Bridie Brennan, moved to Australia in 1958. His father worked in coal mines before serving in World War II. The family settled in Broadmeadows, a suburb in Melbourne.
Eddie and his older brother, Frank McGuire, both received scholarships. They attended Christian Brothers' College, St Kilda.
Starting in media
Eddie's brother, Frank, was a newspaper sports reporter. He helped Eddie get his first job in the media. Eddie started as an Australian Rules Football statistician. He also reported on cricket for The Herald newspaper from 1978 to 1982.
Later, he became a cadet sports reporter for Network Ten. In 1993, he moved to the Nine Network. There, he became the host of a sports variety program.
Eddie's TV Career
Hosting popular shows
In 1994, Eddie McGuire became one of the hosts of the AFL version of The Footy Show. He was on the show until 2005. He later returned to host it several times.
His role at Channel Nine grew even more in 1999. He became the host of the Australian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?. This was a very popular quiz show around the world. He hosted the show from its start on 18 April 1999 until 2006. He also hosted the Sydney New Year's Eve 1999–2000 TV broadcast.
Eddie also hosted the annual Australian Logie Awards show in 2003 and 2004. He co-hosted it in 2005. In January 2007, he returned to regular hosting on the Australian version of the 1 vs. 100 quiz show.
Later TV roles
In June 2008, Eddie temporarily hosted A Current Affair. This show's ratings increased when he was hosting. In February 2009, he hosted a telethon to raise money for victims of the February 2009 Victorian bushfires.
Since April 2009, Eddie McGuire has hosted the game show Millionaire Hot Seat. This show airs in the afternoon. He also hosted a fundraising telethon in Brisbane in January 2011. This was for victims of the 2010–2011 Queensland floods.
In 2011, he hosted another quiz show called The Million Dollar Drop. It only lasted for six episodes. He then hosted Between the Lines, a sports quiz show. This show was also cancelled after only three episodes. During 2011, he hosted This is Your Life, but it did not return in 2012.
In 2012, Eddie joined Fox Footy as an AFL commentator and panelist. He continued to host Millionaire Hot Seat and Channel Nine's Olympic coverage. In July 2017, he returned to The Footy Show for a period.
Radio career
On radio, Eddie McGuire has been a football commentator for Triple M. He rejoined the station in 2009. He co-hosted a breakfast radio show called Triple M's Hot Breakfast with former AFL footballer Luke Darcy. The show ended in November 2020 after 11 years.
In June 2020, Eddie started an AFL radio show for American listeners. It was called Aussie Football Rules America with Eddie McGuire. It aired on Sirius XM satellite radio.
Leading Channel Nine
On 9 February 2006, it was announced that Eddie McGuire would become the new CEO of the Nine Network. This meant he had to stop his on-air roles for a while. He was the CEO for a short time, resigning on 30 June 2007. After this, he took on new roles in programming and returned to more on-screen work.
Collingwood Football Club President
On 29 October 1998, Eddie McGuire was elected president of the Collingwood Football Club. This is a famous Australian rules football club in the Australian Football League (AFL).
During his time as president, Collingwood played in the grand finals in 2002 and 2003. In 2010, Collingwood won the 2010 AFL Grand Final replay against St Kilda.
Eddie also oversaw changes to the club's coaches. He brought in Mick Malthouse as senior coach in 1999. In 2009, he set up a plan for former player Nathan Buckley to become the senior coach after Malthouse in 2011.
Off the field, Eddie oversaw the building of new training and office facilities for Collingwood. The club moved from Victoria Park to the Olympic Park complex. This included new indoor facilities and an outdoor training ground.
In December 2020, Eddie announced he would step down as president at the end of the 2021 season. This would have ended his 23 years leading the club. However, he stepped down earlier in February 2021. This was due to discussions about a report that looked into the club's culture. Mark Korda became the new president.
Political interests
Eddie McGuire has been a supporter of Australian republicanism. This is a movement that wants Australia to have its own head of state, instead of the King of Australia. He was chosen as a delegate to represent Victoria at the 1998 Constitutional Convention. This convention led to a vote in 1999 about Australia becoming a republic, which was not successful.
His brother, Frank McGuire, is a politician for the Australian Labor Party. Eddie has said he would find it hard to represent either of the main political parties. He believes his business interests were more important than going into politics.
Awards and recognition
In 2001, Eddie McGuire received the Australian Sports Medal. This was for his service to Australian Football.
In 2005, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM). This award recognized his service to the community. Especially for his support of healthcare and welfare groups, and for his work in broadcasting.
On 17 May 2013, RMIT University gave Eddie McGuire an honorary doctorate. This means he became a Doctor of Communications. This honor recognized his achievements in media, entertainment, sports, and community work.
Eddie McGuire also spent some time as a member of the Australian Government's Social Inclusion Board.
