Scott is a town located in Brown County, which is part of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. It's a place where people live and work, just like a city or village, but it's called a "town" in Wisconsin.

In 2020, a count of all the people living there, called a census, showed that 3,636 people called Scott home.

The History of Scott, Wisconsin

How Scott Got Its Name

Back in November 1859, the leaders of Brown County decided to split up a larger area called the Town of Green Bay. They wanted to create smaller towns. One of these new towns became what we now know as Scott.

Three names were suggested for the new town: Liberty, Pochequette, and Scott. Robert Gibson, who was the first chairman of the town, really liked the name Scott. He probably chose it because it reminded him of his home country. It's believed that the town was named after a famous writer, Sir Walter Scott.

Communities in Scott

Scott is made up of several smaller communities. These are places where people live, but they aren't officially separate cities or villages.

  • Bay Settlement is a very old community. It's located where Bay Settlement Road and Church Road meet. Only a few other places in Wisconsin, like nearby Green Bay and De Pere, are older.
  • Benderville is another community found at the crossing of County Road A and Point Comfort Road.
  • Chapel Ridge is a community that's partly in Scott and partly in the city of Green Bay. You can find it along Bay Settlement Road. The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is also nearby.
  • Edgewater Beach is a community right on the shores of Green Bay. This is a part of Lake Michigan. It's located between Benderville and Dyckesville.
  • New Franken is a community that's partly in Scott. It's along County Road T, north of WIS 54. Another part of New Franken is in the town of Humboldt.
  • Red Banks is a community located west of Benderville. This place is famous because in 1634, a European explorer named Jean Nicolet landed here. He was the first European to explore what is now Wisconsin.
  • Wequiock is a community just west of WIS 57. It's at the intersection of Bay Settlement Road and VanLaanen Road. Wequiock County Park is a short distance northeast of this community.

Scott covers a total area of about 136.5 square kilometers (52.7 square miles). A large part of this area is water, about 89.5 square kilometers (34.5 square miles), which is about 65.58% of its total size. The land area is about 47.0 square kilometers (18.1 square miles).

There's also an important historical spot called the Hazen archeological site in Scott. This site contains remains from a farm that existed in the 1800s.
