Edie McClurg (born July 23, 1945) is an American actress and comedian. She is known for her many fun and memorable roles in movies and TV shows. You might recognize her as Grace, the secretary in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, or from her voice work in popular animated films like The Little Mermaid and Cars. Early Life and Learning
Edie McClurg was born and grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. Her dad, Mac, was a mailman, and her mom, Irene, worked as a secretary for the FAA. Edie also has an older brother, Bob, who is an actor too!
Edie went to the University of Missouri–Kansas City in the 1960s. She even taught radio there for eight years. Later, she earned a master's degree from Syracuse University. While at the University of Missouri–Kansas City, Edie worked as a DJ, news reporter, and producer for NPR. She even received an honorary doctorate from the university in 2017.
Acting Career Highlights
Edie McClurg has had a long and exciting career in entertainment. She started performing in improv comedy groups. One of these groups was called the Groundlings. She worked with other famous comedians there, like Paul Reubens, who created Pee-wee Herman. Edie even appeared in his first play, The Pee-wee Herman Show, as "Hermit Hattie."
First Roles and TV Shows
Edie's first movie role was in the 1976 horror film Carrie. She also became a regular on the The David Letterman Show in 1980. Over the years, Edie has appeared in almost 90 films and 55 TV shows! She often played funny, sometimes a bit stubborn, characters from the Midwest.
On TV, Edie played Bonnie Brindle in Small Wonder (1985–1987). She was also Mrs. Patty Poole on The Hogan Family (1986–1991). You might have seen her in single episodes of many other popular shows. These include Alice, Mr. Belvedere, Roseanne, Full House, Seinfeld, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Malcolm in the Middle, and Hannah Montana. She also appeared in many commercials.

Edie McClurg has been in lots of movies. Besides Carrie, she was the check-out lady in Mr. Mom (1983). She played Grace, the principal's secretary, in Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986). She was also the car rental agent in Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987). Other films include A River Runs Through It (1992) and Flubber (1997).
Voice Acting Fun
Edie is also very well-known for her voice acting in animated movies and TV shows. She voiced Miss Right in The Secret of NIMH (1982). She was Carlotta, the maid, in Disney's The Little Mermaid (1989). She also voiced Dr. Flora in A Bug's Life (1998). Kids often recognize her as Minny from the first two Cars movies (2006, 2011). She was Mary in Wreck-It Ralph (2012) and Gerda in Frozen (2013).
For TV animation, she voiced characters in Snorks, Life with Louie, and Mrs. Violet Bleakman in Clifford the Big Red Dog. She also lent her voice to shows like The Jetsons, Tiny Toon Adventures, and Rocket Power.
