Edmund Conen (born November 10, 1914 – died March 5, 1990) was a famous German footballer. He played as a striker, which means he was a player whose main job was to score goals.

Edmund Conen's Football Journey

Edmund Conen was born in a town called Ürzig in Germany. He started playing football at a young age. He played for several clubs during his career. These included FV 03 Saarbrücken and Stuttgarter Kickers. He also played as a guest player for clubs like Mulhouse and HSV Groß Born during World War II.

Making an Impact at the World Cup

Conen became well-known at the 1934 FIFA World Cup held in Italy. He was only 19 years old at the time. In his very first match of the tournament against Belgium, he scored three goals! This amazing feat helped Germany win the game 5–2. Only one other German player, Gerd Müller, has scored three goals in a World Cup match since then.

Conen scored four goals in total during the 1934 World Cup. This made him one of the top goal-scorers in the tournament. He helped Germany win the bronze medal by scoring the winning goal in the third-place play-off match against Austria. Germany won that game 3–2.

Playing for the German National Team

Edmund Conen played for the German national team from 1934 to 1942. He played in 28 international matches and scored an impressive 27 goals. This shows how good he was at scoring for his country.

A Brave Comeback

When he was 21, Conen faced a big challenge. He became very ill, which stopped him from playing football for three and a half years. But he was very determined and worked hard to get back on the field. On June 25, 1939, he made a fantastic return to the national team. He scored a goal in Germany's 2–0 victory against Denmark in Copenhagen.

His last international match for Germany was in 1942 during World War II. Germany won that game 5–3 against Hungary in Budapest. Conen played very well in that match alongside other great players.

Becoming a Coach

After his playing career ended, Edmund Conen became a football coach. In the mid-1950s, he coached teams like Eintracht Braunschweig and Wuppertaler SV. He also coached Bayer Leverkusen and other teams from the city of Leverkusen, such as SV Schlebusch and BV Opladen.

Edmund Conen passed away in March 1990 in Leverkusen. This was just a few months before West Germany won their third World Cup championship.
