He is most famous for playing the main character, Alexander Hamilton, in the national tour of the popular musical Hamilton. He also played Fritz in the West Coast premiere of The Nutcracker and the role of Peter in My Mañana Comes.
Edred Utomi's Early Life and Career
Edred Utomi was born on October 1, 1991. His parents came from Nigeria. He grew up in Las Vegas before moving to attend the University of San Diego. Utomi studied communications in college. After graduating, he decided to become a musical theater actor.
He started his acting career in 2013, right after college. Utomi performed in many plays across the U.S. in what are called "regional theaters." These are professional theaters outside of New York City. Before he was chosen to play Alexander Hamilton, he acted in plays in Southern California. These included Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical and A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Becoming a Star in Hamilton
Utomi shared that a musical called In The Heights inspired him to become a musical theater actor. This show was created by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also wrote Hamilton.
Utomi first joined the Hamilton cast as an understudy. An understudy learns many roles and is ready to step in if the main actor cannot perform. He learned the parts of Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, Aaron Burr, and George Washington. About a year later, in January 2019, Utomi was given the main role of Alexander Hamilton permanently.
