Edward S. Porter (born October 19, 1848 – died June 13, 1902) was a doctor, also known as a physician, who lived and worked in Louisville, Kentucky. He helped keep the city healthy as part of the Louisville city sanitary force. He also cared for children at an Orphan's home and patients at a hospital for mental health. He even taught at Simmons College of Kentucky.

Edward Porter's Early Life and School

Edward S. Porter was born in Delaware on October 19, 1848. His parents were Jesse and Priscilla Porter. He went to Lincoln University in Oxford, Pennsylvania for seven years. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1873. This means he completed a four-year college program.

After that, he continued his studies to become a doctor. He attended the Brooklyn Medical College and graduated in 1876. He also studied at the Bellevue Hospital Medical College in New York City.

What Did Edward Porter Do?

After finishing his medical training, Edward Porter lived in Tennessee for one year. Around 1878, he moved to Louisville, Kentucky.

In 1881, he became a doctor and a professor at the State University. This school later became known as Simmons College of Kentucky. From 1882 to 1884, he was part of the Louisville city sanitary force. This group worked to improve public health in the city.

Starting in 1882, he also worked as a doctor at the Orphan's home. He was also a secretary for the Board of Commissioners at the Central Asylum for the Insane. This was a hospital that helped people with mental health conditions. He lived near the hospital in Anchorage, Kentucky.

Around 1870, he started working with the Louisville Gas Company. From about 1882 until he passed away, he was the company's secretary.

Family and His Final Years

Edward Porter was a member of the Fifth Street Baptist church in Louisville. He also sang in the church choir. He married Lucy Bohannon on March 20, 1884. Later, he married Emma Young.

Edward Porter died on June 13, 1902, in Louisville. He passed away from tuberculosis, a serious illness. He had been sick for several years before his death. To try and get better, he spent some time in California and Las Vegas, Nevada.

He was survived by his four daughters: Mrs. W. L. Mapother, Evelyn, Florence, and Alice. He also had two siblings, Walter and Alice. His funeral was held at his brother-in-law's home. He was buried at Cave Hill Cemetery.
