Edward Newby's Military Journey
Edward W. B. Newby was born in Virginia in 1804. He dedicated his life to serving the United States Army. His career spanned three major conflicts. He played different roles, from leading volunteers to commanding cavalry units.
Serving in the Mexican-American War
During the Mexican–American War, Newby joined the fight. On May 22, 1847, he was chosen as captain of a company. This company was part of the 1st Regiment of Illinois Volunteers. Just a few weeks later, on June 8, 1847, he was promoted. He became the colonel leading the entire regiment.
Newby's regiment had a big task. They marched across the Great Plains from Fort Leavenworth. Their mission was to take command of the 9th Military District. They helped keep order in new lands. These lands later became the New Mexico Territory. His troops were stationed in places like Santa Fe, New Mexico and El Paso, Texas. They also had smaller groups in other towns. Newby even led expeditions against the Navajo people. He helped make a peace treaty with them in May 1848. He finished his service in the war on October 16, 1848.
Protecting the American Frontier
After the Mexican War, Newby continued his military career. On March 3, 1855, he became a captain. He joined Company H of the First Cavalry Regiment. This was the first cavalry regiment in the United States Army.
Captain Newby served on the plains. He worked in places like Kansas and the New Mexico Territory. In 1856, he helped keep peace in Kansas. This was during a time of conflict known as "Bloody Kansas". He also took part in important military actions. These included the 1857 Cheyenne Expedition. He also fought in the Battle of Solomon Forks. Later, he served in the Kiowa and Comanche Campaign of 1860.
The Civil War Years
When the American Civil War began, Newby was still serving. On August 3, 1861, he was moved to the U. S. Fourth Cavalry Regiment. His dedication led to another promotion. On July 17, 1862, he became a major. He joined the Third Cavalry Regiment.
Major Newby retired from the army on September 25, 1863. He passed away on March 29, 1870. His long career showed his commitment to the United States. He served in many important moments in American history.
