Edward William Price (1832 – 14 November 1893) was an important civil servant who helped govern the Northern Territory in Australia. He was born in Ireland and later moved to Australia. He served as the Government Resident of the Northern Territory from 1876 to 1883. This role was like being the main leader or representative for the government in that area.

Edward Price's Early Life and Navy Career

Edward William Price was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1832. When he was 19, he joined the Royal Navy, which is the United Kingdom's navy. He served as a midshipman on ships like HMS Ajax. During the Crimean War, he was part of the crew on HMS Simoon. For his service, he received two special awards: the British Crimean War Medal and the Turkish Crimean War Medal. He left the Navy in 1856.

Moving to Australia and Becoming a Civil Servant

In 1859, Price moved to South Australia. The next year, he started working for the government as a civil servant. He spent several years as a court clerk, first in Gawler Town and then in Adelaide. In 1873, he was appointed a Justice of the Peace and a Special Magistrate for South Australia. This meant he could help with legal matters and keep the peace.

Edward Price married Mina Hamilton, who was also from Ireland, in Adelaide on 6 November 1860. They had six children together. Sadly, in 1875, his wife and all their children passed away when the ship they were on, the SS Gothenburg, was lost at sea near Queensland.

Leading the Northern Territory

On 1 July 1876, Edward Price was chosen to be the Government Resident of the Northern Territory. He took over from George Byng Scott. He held this important position until 6 March 1883.

During his time as Government Resident, Price was a strong supporter of Christian values. He also helped start a Church of England church in the Residency, which was partly funded by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel.

After he finished his work as Government Resident, he traveled to London on a ship called SS Bowen. He passed away in London on 14 November 1893.
