Early Life and Baseball Dreams
Edwin Jackson was born in Neu-Ulm, Germany. His father was serving in the United States Army there at the time. Edwin is one of 27 major league players who were born in Germany. He spent some of his early childhood in Germany and Louisiana before growing up in Columbus, Georgia.
High School Success
Jackson went to Shaw High School in Columbus from 1997 to 2001. He played outfield for the school's baseball team, the Raiders. In his senior year, Jackson helped lead the Raiders to win the 2001 GHSA AAAA State Championship title. This was a big achievement for his high school team.
Edwin Jackson's Professional Baseball Journey
Edwin Jackson's journey in professional baseball began when he was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He went on to play for many teams, making history along the way.
Starting with the Los Angeles Dodgers (2003–2005)
The Los Angeles Dodgers picked Jackson in the sixth round of the 2001 MLB draft. He was first drafted as an outfielder, but the Dodgers saw his potential as a pitcher. He made his first major league appearance on his 20th birthday, September 9, 2003. In that game, he pitched very well, earning his first big league win.
Playing for the Tampa Bay Rays (2006–2008)
In 2006, Jackson was traded to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He mostly pitched in relief that year. In 2007, he became a full-time starting pitcher for the Rays. He had a tough start but improved later in the season. In 2008, Jackson became one of the Rays' top pitchers, tying for the most wins on the team with 14 victories.
Time with the Detroit Tigers (2009)
Jackson was traded to the Detroit Tigers in late 2008. He made his Tigers debut in April 2009. That year, he was chosen to play in the 2009 All-Star Game, representing the Tigers. He pitched a great inning in the All-Star Game, retiring three batters on just four pitches.
A Special Moment with the Arizona Diamondbacks (2010)
In 2009, Jackson joined the Arizona Diamondbacks. On June 25, 2010, he achieved something amazing: he pitched a no-hitter against his old team, the Tampa Bay Rays. A no-hitter is when a pitcher completes an entire game without allowing any opposing player to get a hit. This was only the second no-hitter in Diamondbacks' history. It was a very exciting game, with Jackson throwing 149 pitches.
Moving to the Chicago White Sox (2010–2011)
After his no-hitter, Jackson was traded to the Chicago White Sox in July 2010. He was the first pitcher in a long time to be traded in the same season he pitched a no-hitter.
Winning the World Series with the St. Louis Cardinals (2011)

In July 2011, Jackson was traded twice in one day! First to the Toronto Blue Jays, and then to the St. Louis Cardinals. He quickly made an impact with the Cardinals, helping them win games. Jackson was a key part of the Cardinals team that won the 2011 World Series championship. This was a huge achievement in his career.
Playing for Many Teams (2012–2019)
After the Cardinals, Jackson continued his journey through MLB, playing for many different teams.
- Washington Nationals (2012): He signed a one-year contract and had a solid season with the Nationals.
- Chicago Cubs (2013–2015): Jackson signed a longer contract with the Cubs. He pitched for them for a few seasons before being released.
- Atlanta Braves (2015): He joined the Braves for the end of the 2015 season and even recorded his first career save.
- Miami Marlins (2016): Jackson played briefly for the Marlins.
- San Diego Padres (2016): He signed a minor-league contract and later pitched for the Padres.
- Baltimore Orioles (2017): Jackson had a short stint with the Orioles.
- Return to Washington (2017–2018): He returned to the Nationals, starting strong after being called up from the minor leagues.
- Oakland Athletics (2018): Jackson joined the Athletics and, in June 2018, tied the Major League record for playing on 13 different teams. He also earned his 100th career victory with them.
- Toronto Blue Jays (2019): In May 2019, Jackson was traded to the Blue Jays. This made him the first player ever to play for 14 different teams in MLB, setting a new record!
- Return to Detroit Tigers (2019): Later in 2019, Jackson signed a minor-league contract to return to the Detroit Tigers, where he finished his MLB career.
Later Career and Retirement
Jackson signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks again in 2020, but the minor league season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, he played one game for the High Point Rockers to prepare for the Olympics. Edwin Jackson announced his retirement from baseball on September 10, 2022.
Representing His Country: International Play
In May 2021, Edwin Jackson was chosen to be on the United States national baseball team. This team was trying to qualify for baseball at the 2020 Summer Olympics (which were held in 2021). After the team qualified, he was named to the official Olympic roster. The U.S. team went on to win a silver medal at the Olympics, a great honor for Jackson and his teammates.
How Edwin Jackson Pitched
Edwin Jackson was known for his pitching style, which mainly used two strong pitches. He threw a fast four-seam fastball that was usually around 95 miles per hour. He also had a two-seam fastball that was similar in speed. His main pitch against right-handed batters was a hard slurve, which is a mix between a slider and a curveball. Against left-handed batters, he often used a changeup and sometimes a curveball.
