Eighter Island (Irish: An tÍochtar) is a small island located off the coast of County Donegal in Ireland. It's so tiny that it's also considered a 'townland,' which is a small land division. The closest town on the mainland is Burtonport.
Exploring Eighter Island's Location
Eighter Island is about one kilometer east of a larger island called Arranmore. It's also northwest of Inishcoo, another small island. Inishcoo is separated from Rutland Island and the mainland by narrow water channels.
A special footbridge connects Inishcoo and Rutland Island. Both of these islands are known for their beautiful sandy beaches. The inside part of Eighter Island is mostly rocky. The best places to land a boat are found on the southern side of the island.
A Look at Eighter Island's Past
A small group of people used to live on Eighter Island during the early 1900s. However, today, no one lives on the island permanently.
Some of the old houses on Eighter Island are now used as holiday homes. Most of these homes are located in the southeastern part of the island.
