Eilean Loain is a small island located in Loch Sween. It is part of the beautiful Inner Hebrides islands in Scotland. The name "Eilean Loain" means "pack of hounds isle." This tiny island is about 15 hectares in size. Its highest point is 28 meters (92 feet) above sea level.
Where is Eilean Loain?
This island sits about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) west of Kilmichael of Inverlussa. This village is in an area called Knapdale. Eilean Loain is also about the same distance southeast of Tayvallich. Tayvallich is another village located on the opposite side of the loch. A tiny islet called Cala lies to the northwest of Eilean Loain.
What's on the Island?
Eilean Loain has a strong jetty on its north shore. A jetty is like a small pier where boats can dock. There is also a large building nearby. Some people have described the island as "inhabited." This means someone lives there. However, official records from the National Records of Scotland show that no one usually lived there during the 2001 or 2011 censuses. Even so, local council records show there is a house on the island.

Eilean Loain is part of the Knapdale National Scenic Area. Scotland has 40 such areas. A National Scenic Area is a special place. It is protected because of its amazing natural beauty. These areas are important for their landscapes, wildlife, and cultural heritage.
