The Story of El Cenizo
For many years, El Cenizo was an informal community. It was known as a colonia, which is a type of settlement in the United States near the Mexico border. These communities often started without formal planning. The city officially became a city in 1989.
Official Language Discussions
In 1999 and again in 2006, El Cenizo received national attention. This happened because it was reported that the city had made Spanish its official language. The mayor at the time explained that official city business was done in both English and Spanish. He believed that English was important for the United States. However, he also felt that making English the only official language might harm programs that help people learn both languages.
Lawsuit About State Laws
In 2017, a new law called SB4 was passed in the Texas Legislature. This law aimed to make local officials help enforce federal immigration laws. El Cenizo filed a lawsuit against this new state law. The city argued that the law was forcing local officials to do something that should be handled by the federal government.
Soon after, El Cenizo's lawsuit was combined with similar lawsuits from much larger cities. These included San Antonio, Austin, and Dallas. El Cenizo became the main city leading this combined legal challenge.
