Elano Blumer (born June 14, 1981), known simply as Elano, is a Brazilian football coach and former player. He played as an attacking midfielder.

Elano was famous for his accurate passes and amazing free kicks. He started his professional career at Santos in Brazil. Later, he played for six years in Europe with teams like Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine, Manchester City in England, and Galatasaray in Turkey.

He returned to Santos in 2011. He also played for other Brazilian teams like Grêmio and Flamengo. After that, he joined Chennaiyin in the Indian Super League. He was their star player and became the league's top scorer. In 2015, Elano came back to Santos for a third time.

Elano played 50 games for the Brazil national team between 2004 and 2011, scoring nine goals. He helped Brazil win the 2007 Copa América and the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup. He also played in the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2011 Copa América. After he stopped playing, he became a football manager in 2020.

Elano's Football Journey: Club Career Highlights

Elano's career began in Brazil and took him to Europe and India. He played for many different teams, showing his skills as a midfielder.

Starting Strong: Santos FC Beginnings

Elano started his football journey at Guarani in Brazil. After a short time with Internacional, he joined Santos in 2001. He played his first senior game for Santos on January 21, 2001.

He quickly became a key player for Santos. He played alongside famous players like Robinho and Diego. Elano became known as a talented midfielder who could score goals. In 2004, he scored 22 goals, helping Santos win the Brazilian Championship. After three years and 34 goals for Santos, he moved to Ukraine to play for Shakhtar Donetsk in 2005.

Playing in Ukraine: Shakhtar Donetsk Success

Elano joined Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine. At first, he didn't play every game. But soon, he became a very important player for the team. His excellent performance led to a special moment: he became the first player from the Ukrainian Premier League to be called up for the Brazil national team. This happened for a game against Norway in August 2006.

Moving to England: Manchester City Adventures

On August 2, 2007, Manchester City bought Elano for about £8 million. He signed a four-year contract with the English club. He played his first game for City against West Ham United. He even helped set up the first goal in that match.

Elano quickly liked living in Manchester. He said the city was beautiful and the weather was better than in Ukraine. He was also surprised by how fast the game was in the Premier League. He wore the number 11 shirt for Manchester City.

On September 29, Elano scored his first goal for City in a 3–1 win against Newcastle United. He scored two more goals eight days later against Middlesbrough. One was a powerful shot from far away, and the other was a curving free-kick. He kept scoring, including a penalty in a League Cup game.

In 2008, he scored the first goal of the year for Manchester City against Newcastle. He also scored winning goals in the FA Cup. His manager, Sven-Göran Eriksson, was very happy with his performance. Elano showed he could play in many different positions. He finished his first season with ten goals and many assists.

In the 2008–09 season, Elano continued to play well. He scored two goals in a 3–0 win against West Ham. He also scored a goal from 25 yards out in a UEFA Cup match. He kept his perfect record for scoring penalties, helping Manchester City win several games.

Turkish Challenge: Galatasaray S.K.

Elano joined Galatasaray in Turkey on July 30, 2009. He signed a four-year contract. Over 1,300 fans greeted him at the airport! Elano took the number 9 shirt, which was a very important number for the club. He played his first game on August 20, 2009, in a UEFA Europa League match. He scored his first goal for Galatasaray in his home league debut, a fantastic left-foot shot from 28 yards.

Back to Brazil: Santos, Grêmio, and Flamengo

Elano returned to his former club, Santos, on November 30, 2010. Santos bought him for €2.9 million. In 2011, he was the top scorer in the 2011 Campeonato Paulista (a state championship) with 11 goals.

On July 8, 2012, Elano joined Grêmio. He signed a three-year contract. He also had a short time playing for Flamengo in 2014, on loan from Grêmio. After leaving Flamengo, his contract with Grêmio ended in August 2014.

Indian Adventure: Chennaiyin FC

On September 20, 2014, Elano signed with Chennaiyin in the Indian Super League (ISL). He was the team's "marquee player," meaning a famous star player. He scored a goal from a free kick in his very first game for Chennaiyin, making him the first marquee player to score in the ISL. He scored two goals and made two assists in a big 5–1 win against Mumbai City. He ended the season as the league's top scorer with eight goals.

Third Time's the Charm: Return to Santos

On January 13, 2015, Elano agreed to return to Santos for a third time. He played his first game in this third period on February 1. In May, he extended his contract for another season.

However, on June 17, 2015, Elano went back to Chennaiyin on loan, again as their marquee player. He helped Chennaiyin win the ISL championship in 2015.

After returning to Santos in January 2016, Elano didn't play as much. On November 24, 2016, he announced he would retire from playing professional football in December. He then became an assistant manager for Santos. Elano played his last professional game on December 11, 2016. He finished his playing career with 322 matches and 68 goals just for Santos.

Elano's International Career with Brazil

Elano played for the Brazil national team in 2004. He played 50 games for Brazil and scored nine goals.

He scored his first two goals for Brazil in a friendly game against Argentina in London in September 2006.

In 2007, Elano played in the Copa América. He played four games, including the final against Argentina, where he helped set up a goal.

Elano scored his sixth international goal against Italy in 2009. He also helped set up the winning goal for Lúcio in the final of the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup against the United States. This helped Brazil win their third trophy in that competition.

In November 2009, Elano made an assist in a friendly game against England. He passed the ball to Nilmar, who scored the winning goal.

2010 FIFA World Cup Performance

On June 15, 2010, Elano scored Brazil's second goal against North Korea in their first game of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He scored again against the Ivory Coast in Brazil's second game. However, he got injured during that match and could not play for the rest of the tournament.

2011 Copa América Experience

Elano was part of the Brazilian team for the 2011 tournament in Argentina. He came on as a substitute in two group stage matches.

In the quarter-final match against Paraguay, the game ended in a tie, leading to a penalty shootout. Elano was the first to take a penalty kick, but he missed. Brazil lost the shootout and was eliminated from the tournament.

Elano's Life Off the Field

Elano is married to Alexandra, and they have two daughters. He is a practicing Roman Catholic.

After the 2015 Indian Super League final, there was an incident where Elano was involved in a disagreement with a co-owner of FC Goa. Elano stated he was trying to calm the situation. He was not charged by the football authorities.

Elano's Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Elano stayed at his last club, Santos, as an assistant manager.

Coaching Santos FC

On June 4, 2017, Elano became the interim manager for Santos after the previous manager left. He managed two matches before a new manager was appointed. On October 28, 2017, he was again named interim manager until the end of the year. He helped the club finish third in the league. However, he was let go by the club on December 31.

Managing Other Brazilian Clubs

On August 7, 2019, Elano became the manager of another of his former clubs, Inter de Limeira. He managed to help the team avoid being relegated. He left the club in August 2020.

On August 27, 2020, Elano took charge of Série B team Figueirense. He was dismissed on November 13, 2020.

On April 26, 2021, Elano became the manager of Ferroviária. He left the club by mutual agreement in March 2022.

On July 20, 2022, Elano was announced as the manager of Náutico. He was sacked on August 21, after only one win in six matches.

Elano returned to Ferroviária on January 26, 2023. He left the club again in June 2023.
