Elano Blumer (born on June 14, 1981), known simply as Elano, is a Brazilian football coach and former player. He played as an attacking midfielder, a position where he helped create goals.
Elano was famous for his accurate passes and amazing free kicks. He started his professional career at Santos in Brazil. He then spent six years playing in Europe for teams like Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine, Manchester City in England, and Galatasaray in Turkey.
He returned to Santos in 2011 and later played for other Brazilian teams. He also became a star player for Chennaiyin in the Indian Super League. Elano played 50 games for the Brazil national team between 2004 and 2011, scoring nine goals. He helped Brazil win the 2007 Copa América and the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup. After he stopped playing, he became a football manager in 2020.

Playing Career Highlights
Starting at Santos
Elano began his football journey with Guarani in Brazil. After a short time with Internacional, he joined Santos in 2001. He played his first senior game for Santos on January 21, 2001.
He quickly became a key player for Santos, playing alongside famous players like Robinho and Diego. Elano became known as a talented midfielder who could score many goals. In 2004, he scored a career-high 22 goals, helping Santos win the Brazilian Championship.
Moving to Europe
After his success in Brazil, Elano moved to Ukraine to play for Shakhtar Donetsk in 2005. Even though he didn't play every game at first, he soon showed how good he was. He even became the first player from the Ukrainian league to be called up for the Brazil national team.
Time at Manchester City
On August 2, 2007, Elano joined Manchester City in England. He signed a four-year contract. He made his first appearance for the team on the opening day of the season. Elano quickly enjoyed living in Manchester, saying the city was beautiful.
He scored his first goal for City on September 29, 2007, in a 3–1 win against Newcastle United. He scored two more goals eight days later against Middlesbrough, including a fantastic free-kick. Elano continued his great form, scoring important goals from penalties and open play. He finished his first season with ten goals and many assists.
Elano played in many different positions for Manchester City, showing how versatile he was. He helped the team in the UEFA Cup and continued to score penalties.
Playing for Galatasaray
Elano moved to Galatasaray in Turkey on July 30, 2009. He signed a four-year contract and was welcomed by many fans at the airport. He wore the number 9 shirt, which was a special number for the club. He scored his first goal for Galatasaray on his home debut with a fantastic left-foot shot from far away.
Returning to Brazil and India
Elano returned to his former club Santos on November 30, 2010. He quickly became a top scorer in the 2011 Campeonato Paulista, a state championship, with 11 goals.
Later, he played for Grêmio and had a short loan spell at Flamengo.
Star Player in India
On September 20, 2014, Elano signed with Chennaiyin in the Indian Super League (ISL). He was their "marquee player," meaning he was a big star brought in to attract attention. He scored from a free kick in his very first game, becoming the first marquee player to score in the ISL.
He finished the season as the league's top scorer with eight goals. He returned to Chennaiyin for a second season in 2015 and helped them win the ISL championship. After the final, there was an incident where Elano was arrested for allegedly assaulting a club co-owner. He was later released and not charged after investigations showed he was trying to calm the situation.
Final Years at Santos
In January 2015, Elano agreed to play for Santos again for a third time. He didn't play as often in these final years. On November 24, 2016, he announced that he would retire from professional football. His last game was on December 11, 2016. He ended his playing career having played 322 matches and scoring 68 goals for Santos.
International Career
Elano first played for the Brazil national team in 2004. He played 50 games for his country and scored nine goals. He scored his first two international goals in a friendly game against Argentina in 2006.
In 2007, Elano was part of the Brazil team that won the Copa América. He played four games, including the final, where he helped set up a goal. He also helped Brazil win the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, setting up the winning goal in the final against the United States.
2010 FIFA World Cup

Elano played in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. On June 15, 2010, he scored Brazil's second goal against North Korea. He also scored a goal against the Ivory Coast in Brazil's second game. However, he got injured in that game and could not play for the rest of the tournament.
2011 Copa América
Elano was also part of the Brazilian team for the 2011 Copa América in Argentina. He came on as a substitute in two group stage matches. In the quarter-final against Paraguay, the game went to a penalty shootout. Elano was the first to take a penalty, but he missed. Brazil ended up losing the shootout and was eliminated from the tournament.
Life After Playing
Elano is married to Alexandra and they have two daughters. He is a practicing Roman Catholic.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Elano stayed at Santos as an assistant manager. He was appointed interim manager for Santos twice in 2017. He led the team to a third-place finish in the league during his second interim period.
In 2020, Elano became the manager of Inter de Limeira, another one of his former clubs. He then managed Figueirense later that year.
He also coached Ferroviária from 2021 to 2022. In July 2022, he became the manager of Náutico, but he was sacked after just one win in six matches. Elano returned to Ferroviária in January 2023.
