Eldar Kaisynovich Kuliev (born December 31, 1951 – died January 14, 2017) was a talented Soviet and Russian film director and screenwriter. A film director is someone who leads the making of a movie. A screenwriter writes the story for films or TV shows.
Eldar was born in a city called Frunze (now Bishkek) in Kyrgyzstan. His father was Kaisyn Kuliev, a very famous Balkar poet. His mother, Maka, was from the Ingush people. At the time Eldar was born, his family, like many other Balkars, had been moved to Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.
Eldar had two younger brothers. His brother Alim Kouliev is a Russian-American actor who works in Hollywood. His youngest brother, Azamat Kuliev, is a Russian painter who lives in Istanbul, Turkey.
His Career in Film
Eldar Kuliev studied film directing at a famous school in Moscow. It was called the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK). He learned from a well-known director named Aleksandr Zguridy.
Eldar was married to Bella Akhmadulina, who was a famous Russian poet. They had a daughter named Elizaveta Kulieva, who also became a Russian poet.
Eldar wrote the original story for a TV miniseries called The Wounded Stones. This show was named after a poetry book written by his father. It was made in 1987 at the Dovzhenko Film Studios in the Soviet Union.
Sometimes, Eldar's creative ideas, especially in his novel The Farewell Look, were different from what the government wanted. Because of this, some of his works were not allowed to be published in the Soviet Union.
After the Soviet Union ended in 1991, Eldar Kuliev faced challenges. He was in a car accident and later became seriously ill. These events made it difficult for him to continue his film career. Eldar Kuliev passed away in his apartment in Moscow on January 14, 2017.
