History of Eldred Township
How Eldred Township Began
Eldred Township is one of the smaller townships in Lycoming County. It was created in 1858 from a part of Hepburn Township. People voted on whether to create the new township, and more people voted "yes." On November 16, 1858, a judge officially made it a township. It was named Eldred to honor C. D. Eldred, who was a judge at the time.
Early Settlers and Industries
The first European settlers in Eldred Township were mostly Quakers. They were drawn to the area by land deals. These early families included the Winners, Wilsons, and Marshalls. The area where they settled is still known as "Quaker Hill."
In the late 1800s, there were several important businesses in the township.
- In 1892, David Kiess & Brother had a sawmill in the northern part of the township.
- J. W. Milnor Sr. also had a sawmill nearby.
- C. D. Heim ran another sawmill in the southeastern part.
- All these sawmills used water from Mill Creek to power their machines.
- There were also two gristmills in Warrensville. Gristmills grind grain into flour. One was powered by water, and the other used both steam and water.
The Village of Warrensville
Warrensville is the only village in Eldred Township. In 1842, people met to decide on a name for their new post office. They chose "Warrensville" to honor General Joseph Warren. The post office opened on July 25, 1842.
The land where Warrensville stands was first cleared in 1802 by Samuel Carpenter. He built a gristmill, a sawmill, and a carding machine. These were the first of their kind in the area and were very helpful for the early settlers. The village itself was planned out in 1841.
By 1892, Warrensville had:
- Two stores
- A Temperance Hotel (a hotel that didn't serve alcohol)
- A tannery (where animal hides are turned into leather)
- Two wagon makers
- Two blacksmith shops
