Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Eleanor Alberga (born on September 30, 1949) is a talented music composer from Jamaica. She now lives and works in the United Kingdom. She writes many different kinds of music. Some of her recent works include two Violin Concertos, a Trumpet Concerto, and a Symphony.

Her Journey in Music

Eleanor Alberga was born in Kingston, Jamaica. When she was just five years old, she decided she wanted to be a concert pianist. This means she wanted to play the piano in big concerts. She also started writing her own short music pieces. While still in school, she played the guitar with the Jamaican Folk Singers.

In 1970, Eleanor won a special scholarship. This allowed her to study music at the Royal Academy of Music in London. After finishing her studies, she performed as a concert pianist for many years. In 2001, she decided to focus completely on writing music. She stopped performing to become a full-time composer.

Eleanor Alberga also teaches at the Royal Academy of Music in London. She used to be a pianist and music director for the London Contemporary Dance Theatre. Her music has been played by famous orchestras like the Royal Philharmonic and the London Philharmonic. Her compositions have been heard in many countries, including Australia, South America, Canada, Europe, and China.

In 1992, she married Thomas Bowes, who is a violinist. They live in Herefordshire and sometimes perform music together as a duo called Double Exposure. Thomas Bowes was the first person to play both of her Violin Concertos. In 2021, Eleanor Alberga was given a special award called the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her amazing contributions to music.

Her Musical Style

As a composer, Eleanor Alberga uses a style called "tonal harmony." This means her music often sounds like it has a clear home note or key. She also likes to use repeated rhythmic patterns, which can make her music feel very energetic.

Some of her piano music, like Jamaican Medley (1983) and Hill and Gully Ride (1990), uses sounds and rhythms from her Jamaican background. These pieces are full of vibrant "colour" and interesting "cross-rhythms." Her piece Nightscape: the Horniman Serenade (1983) even includes parts that sound like jazz music. Later, her music started to use more "dissonance." This means some notes might sound a bit clashing or tense, which adds excitement. Her three string quartets (1993, 1994, and 2001) are good examples of this.

Eleanor Alberga has been asked to write music for many important projects. For example, the Roald Dahl Foundation asked her to compose Roald Dahl's 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' in 1994. This piece is often performed in schools. Later, famous actors like Danny DeVito narrated a recording of it.

She also wrote an opera called Letters of a Love Betrayed. An opera is a play where the story is told mostly through singing. This opera was first performed at the Royal Opera House in London in 2009. In 2015, she wrote a choral work called Arise, Athena!. A choral work is music written for a choir to sing. This piece was chosen to open the very last night of the famous BBC Proms concert series.
