Merredin was a special area in Western Australia where people voted for their representatives. This area was called an electoral district. It was used for elections to the Legislative Assembly, which is like the state parliament, from 1950 to 2008.
At first, this area was known as Merredin-Yilgarn. But in 1977, its name was made shorter to just Merredin. The district was located in a farming area of Western Australia called the Wheatbelt. It got its name from the town of Merredin.
The Merredin electoral district was closed down in 2008. This happened because of new rules that changed how voting areas were set up. These rules aimed to make sure that every person's vote counted equally, no matter where they lived. Most of the Merredin area became part of a new voting district called Central Wheatbelt. Some parts also joined the districts of Moore and Wagin.
Over the years, different political parties represented Merredin. For most of its first 24 years, the Labor Party held the seat. But from 1977 onwards, the National Party became very strong in this area.
Where Was Merredin?
When the Merredin district was closed, it covered several rural areas inland. These areas are called shires. Some of the towns within the Merredin district included Merredin, Dalwallinu, Wongan Hills, Cunderdin, Kellerberrin, Quairading, Bruce Rock and Corrigin.
