Elena and the Secret of Avalor is a special computer-animated musical adventure movie. It connects two popular Disney shows: Sofia the First and Elena of Avalor. This movie actually takes place before the Elena of Avalor series begins. It first aired on November 20, 2016, on both Disney Channel and Disney Junior. The movie was directed by Jamie Mitchell and written by Craig Gerber. It was even nominated for an Emmy Award in 2017 for Outstanding Animated Show!

The Story of Avalor's Secret

This movie tells the exciting story of how Princess Elena was freed from a magical amulet. It also shows how she got her kingdom back from an evil sorceress.

Elena's Past Revealed

The story begins with Princess Elena of Avalor talking to her friend Naomi. Elena tells Naomi how she was trapped inside a magical amulet for 41 years! She shows Naomi a broken wand, which belonged to the evil sorceress Shuriki. Elena explains that a brave young princess named Sofia helped set her free. Then, Elena starts to tell Naomi the whole amazing story.

Sofia's Discovery

Princess Sofia of Enchancia is having a daydream. In her dream, an evil sorceress attacks Avalor Palace. The sorceress defeats Elena's parents and then attacks Elena. Suddenly, Sofia's dream ends. It's summer vacation! As Sofia heads home, her special amulet starts to glow blue. This means it's time for her to visit the Secret Library.

The Lost Princess

In the Secret Library, a magical book called "The Lost Princess of Avalor" appears for Sofia. The book transforms into a man named Alacazar. He was the Royal Wizard of Avalor. Alacazar tells Sofia the sad story of Princess Elena. On her 15th birthday, Elena received the Amulet of Avalor. But then, a powerful sorceress named Shuriki invaded Avalor. Shuriki defeated Elena's parents, King Raul and Queen Lucia. Elena bravely faced Shuriki alone. The Amulet of Avalor saved Elena by pulling her inside it.

Alacazar explains that he spent years trying to free Elena. He learned that only a special princess could do it. He eventually turned himself into the book Sofia found. Alacazar tells Sofia that her amulet has been testing many princesses. Now, it has chosen Sofia to free Elena! He warns Sofia that Shuriki is still very powerful. To free Elena, Sofia must go to Avalor. She needs to summon Alacazar's spirit guide, Zuzo. Sofia convinces her family to take their summer vacation in Avalor.

Arriving in Avalor

Sofia and her family arrive in Avalor on a grand ship. Sofia is worried because they are going to meet Shuriki. Her father, King Roland, sent a message ahead. It is the custom to greet the ruler when visiting a new kingdom. Shuriki greets them, but Sofia notices the crowds don't seem happy. She also sees Shuriki's guards take a flute from a boy. This makes Sofia even more suspicious.

At Avalor Palace, Shuriki gives them a tour. Then, they go to a feast. Suddenly, flying jaguars called Jaquins swoop down and grab some food! Shuriki tries to use her magic, but Chancellor Esteban stops her. Sofia's amulet glows, leading her to the Jaquins. Sofia asks them for help. At first, the Jaquins refuse because Sofia is with Shuriki's guests. But when Sofia explains her plan to bring Princess Elena back, the Jaquins are excited to help! They take Sofia to Alacazar's old house.

Mateo and the Plan

At Alacazar's house, Sofia meets Mateo, Alacazar's grandson. Mateo secretly practices magic because Shuriki outlawed it. He realizes Sofia's amulet is the Amulet of Avalor. Mateo summons Zuzo, Alacazar's spirit animal guide. Zuzo tells Sofia how to free Elena. She needs to get Shuriki's magic wand. Then, she must wrap the amulet around the wand. Finally, she needs to place both on the Crown of Aziluna. This crown belonged to a healer who could undo any spell.

Sofia isn't sure how to get Shuriki's wand. Mateo accidentally gives her an idea: she can dance with Shuriki! Back at the palace, Sofia convinces Shuriki to dance the sambarossa with her. During the dance, Sofia pretends to trip. While Shuriki is distracted, Sofia quickly takes the wand! Sofia then convinces Shuriki to let her and her siblings play hide-and-seek. Sofia takes her brother and sister away. She tells them to stay hidden for as long as possible. Sofia then meets Mateo and the Jaquins, Luna and Skylar, with the wand. They are all impressed! The group then flies off to free Elena.

Elena's Freedom

The group arrives at the Maruvian temple where the Crown of Aziluna is kept. Inside, they find a magical lake. To make the magic work, Sofia must swim across the enchanted water. Sofia turns into a mermaid and dives in. Underwater, she finds the Crown of Aziluna. She does exactly as Zuzo instructed. An island with a statue rises from the water. Sofia slides down to the statue's base. Her amulet glows pink and descends. In a flash of pink light, Princess Elena appears! Elena declares her intention to free Avalor from Shuriki.

Outside the temple, Elena tells the group her plan to use Shuriki's wand against her. Sofia and Mateo want to help, but Elena insists on facing Shuriki alone. She flies back to the palace. Sofia and Mateo follow her anyway.

Confronting Shuriki

Armando is still playing hide-and-seek with Sofia's siblings when Elena lands in the palace. Elena confronts Shuriki in the throne room. She tells Shuriki it's time to pay for her crimes. King Roland asks what crimes. Elena explains how Shuriki invaded Avalor and took the throne from her family. Shuriki tries to use her wand, but realizes Elena has it! She figures out Sofia took it. Queen Miranda is shocked to learn Sofia was involved. Shuriki orders her guards to arrest Roland and Miranda.

Elena tries to blast Shuriki, but only hits a tapestry. This reveals a painting of Elena's little sister and grandparents. Shuriki reveals that Alacazar protected them in the painting. She also reveals that Esteban is Elena's cousin. Shuriki then takes back her wand. She orders her guards to seize Elena. But Skylar flies in and helps Elena escape! Shuriki orders Sofia's family thrown into the dungeon. She also demands that Sofia and Elena be captured.

Rallying the Kingdom

Elena meets up with Sofia and tells her that Shuriki has captured her family. They fly back to Mateo's house. Mateo's mother, Rafa, knows a spell to free Elena's family. Citizens of Avalor also arrive. At Sofia's urging, Elena agrees to let them help. Sofia and Elena fly to a secret entrance to the castle. They sneak into the dungeon. Inside, they find Armando, who agrees to help. While Armando distracts the guard, Sofia frees her family. Elena explains everything to Roland and Miranda. They forgive Sofia for hiding her true reasons for visiting Avalor.

The group then sets off to put Elena's plan into action. Meanwhile, Shuriki demands results from Esteban. Esteban reminds her that she promised no one in his family would get hurt. Shuriki reminds him she also promised him power. She warns him to be grateful, or he will end up like Elena's parents. Suddenly, Luna flies in and attacks Shuriki, leading her away. Mateo sneaks in and frees Elena's family from the painting. They are overjoyed to reunite with Elena! The entire group then flies off to rally the citizens of Avalor against Shuriki. The Avalorians and the Enchancians march on the castle together. They overwhelm the guards, who lock the gate.

Victory for Avalor

Sofia and Elena fly in and open the castle gates. King Roland keeps the guards busy. The Avalorians march through. Shuriki still has her magic, even though she is outnumbered. As Shuriki raises her wand to blast Elena, Esteban grabs Shuriki's wand! He tosses it to Elena, who snaps it in two. With her wand broken, Shuriki's powers are destroyed. She ages into an old woman. Esteban then declares Elena the rightful ruler of Avalor.

Sofia offers the amulet back to Elena. But Elena tells Sofia to keep it. Elena then takes her place as the Queen of Avalor. Everyone in Avalor celebrates! Back in the Secret Library, Sofia and Alacazar review the story Sofia helped finish. Sofia gave Elena's story a great ending. This also gave Sofia's own story a great beginning. After Alacazar vanishes, Sofia gets a new dress. She then leaves the Secret Library.

In the present, Elena and Naomi decide to lock Shuriki's broken wand away in the treasury. They then head back to the palace together.
