Elisabeth Shue (born October 6, 1963) is an American actress. She is known for her roles in many popular movies. Some of her famous films include The Karate Kid (1984), Adventures in Babysitting (1987), and Back to the Future Part II (1989). She also starred in Leaving Las Vegas (1995), which earned her an Academy Award nomination.
On television, Shue played Julie Finlay in the crime drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2012–2015). She also appeared as Madelyn Stillwell in the superhero series The Boys (2019–2020). She has continued this role in spin-off shows.

Early Life and Education
Elisabeth Shue was born on October 6, 1963, in Wilmington, Delaware. Her father was a lawyer and businessman who once ran for Congress. Her mother worked in banking. Elisabeth grew up in South Orange, New Jersey. Her parents divorced when she was nine years old.
Her mother's family came from early American settlers. Her father's family came from Germany in the 1800s. Elisabeth was raised with her three brothers: William, Andrew, and John. They were very close. Her younger brother, Andrew Shue, is also an actor. He is famous for his role in the TV show Melrose Place.
Elisabeth graduated from Columbia High School in 1981. She and Andrew were later added to the school's Hall of Fame in 1994.
After high school, Shue went to Wellesley College. She then moved to Harvard University in 1985. She left college early to pursue her acting career. She was inspired by a friend to work in TV commercials to help pay for college. Years later, in 2000, she went back to Harvard. She finished her degree in political science.

Starting in the 1980s
While in high school, Elisabeth Shue began acting in TV commercials. She appeared in ads for popular brands like Burger King and DeBeers diamonds. She had small roles in early films, sometimes credited as Lisa Shue.
Her first major movie role was in 1984. She co-starred in The Karate Kid as Ali Mills. Ali was the love interest of the main character. Shue later returned to this role in the TV series Cobra Kai.
From 1984 to 1985, she was a regular on the TV series Call to Glory. In 1987, she starred in the popular movie Adventures in Babysitting.
In 1988, Shue starred in Cocktail with Tom Cruise. The next year, she appeared as Jennifer Parker in Back to the Future Part II (1989). She continued the role in Back to the Future Part III (1990). She took over the role from another actress. Around this time, her older brother, William, sadly passed away during a family vacation. Even though her career was growing, she chose smaller roles in these sequels. This allowed her to deal with her family loss.
In 1990, Shue made her Broadway debut in Some American Abroad. The next year, she appeared in the comedies The Marrying Man and Soapdish. She worked with stars like Alec Baldwin and Whoopi Goldberg.
Success and Recognition (1995-Present)
In 1995, Elisabeth Shue starred in Leaving Las Vegas. Her performance earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. She also won several other awards for this role.
After her Oscar nomination, Shue took on many different roles. She appeared in The Saint with Val Kilmer. She also starred in Hollow Man (2000) with Kevin Bacon.
In 2007, Shue and her two brothers, Andrew and John, produced the movie Gracie. Her husband, Davis Guggenheim, directed it. Shue played the mother of the main character. The story was based on her own experiences playing on a boys' soccer team. The movie also honored her late brother, William.
In 2010, Shue starred in the horror film Piranha 3D. In 2012, she joined the cast of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. She played Julie Finlay, a new CSI. She stayed on the show until 2015. Shue is a big tennis fan. She even suggested an episode about a murder at a tennis tournament. Her wish came true! Famous tennis players like Chris Evert appeared in the episode.
In 2017, Shue had a strong supporting role in Battle of the Sexes. She played Priscilla Wheelan. In 2018, she co-starred in Death Wish with Bruce Willis.
In 2019, Shue took a leading role in The Boys. She played Madelyn Stillwell. In 2020, she starred in Greyhound with Tom Hanks. That same year, she returned to her Karate Kid role as Ali Mills in the series Cobra Kai.
Personal Life
Elisabeth Shue married film director Davis Guggenheim in 1994. They have three children together. Their son, Miles, was born in 1997. Their first daughter, Stella, was born in 2001. Their second daughter, Agnes Charles, was born in 2006.
