Early Life and Education

Elisabeth Shue was born on October 6, 1963, in Wilmington, Delaware. Her father was a lawyer and businessman who once ran for Congress. Her mother worked in banking. Elisabeth grew up in South Orange, New Jersey. Her parents divorced when she was nine years old.

Her mother's family came from early American settlers. Her father's family came from Germany in the 1800s. Elisabeth was raised with her three brothers: William, Andrew, and John. They were very close. Her younger brother, Andrew Shue, is also an actor. He is famous for his role in the TV show Melrose Place.

Elisabeth graduated from Columbia High School in 1981. She and Andrew were later added to the school's Hall of Fame in 1994.

After high school, Shue went to Wellesley College. She then moved to Harvard University in 1985. She left college early to pursue her acting career. She was inspired by a friend to work in TV commercials to help pay for college. Years later, in 2000, she went back to Harvard. She finished her degree in political science.
