Elizabeth Marion Frances Montagu Douglas Scott (born Lady Elizabeth Kerr; 8 June 1954 – 30 April 2023) was known as the Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry. She was a Scottish noblewoman and helped many charities.

Early Life and Education

Elizabeth Kerr was born on June 8, 1954. Her parents were Peter Kerr, the 12th Marquess of Lothian, and Antonella Newland. She had several brothers and sisters.

She studied sociology at the London School of Economics university.

Career and Charity Work

After university, Elizabeth worked for BBC Radio. She helped with a show called Kaleidoscope on BBC Radio 4. Later, she worked for BBC Radio Solway.

The Duchess loved the arts and history. She was the leader of the Scottish Ballet and the Heritage Education Trust. She also helped manage the National Museums Scotland and the British Museum.

In 2010, she started the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction books. She also created the Young Walter Scott Prize for younger writers. She supported the Royal Caledonian Ball, a special event for charity.

Marriage and Family

On October 31, 1981, she married Richard Montagu Douglas Scott. He was then known as the Earl of Dalkeith. Later, he became the 10th Duke of Buccleuch and 12th Duke of Queensberry.

When she married, she was called the Countess of Dalkeith. In 2007, when her husband became a Duke, she became the Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry.

They had four children:

  • Lady Louisa Jane Therese Montagu Douglas Scott (born 1 October 1982)
  • Walter John Francis Montagu Douglas Scott, Earl of Dalkeith (born 2 August 1984)
  • Lord Charles David Peter Montagu Douglas Scott (born 20 April 1987)
  • Lady Amabel Clare Alice Montagu Douglas Scott (born 23 June 1992)

Her husband was one of Scotland's largest private landowners. The family lived on four large estates. These included Boughton House in Northamptonshire and Drumlanrig Castle in Dumfries and Galloway. They also lived at Eildon Hall and Bowhill House in the Scottish Borders.

Death

The Duchess passed away on April 30, 2023, at the age of 68. She died from pneumonia. Her death happened just six days before the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla. At the coronation, her husband carried an important item called the Sceptre with Cross into Westminster Abbey.
