A Look Back in Time

Elk Falls started to grow in 1870 when the first house was built there. That same year, a post office opened, which helped the community connect with the outside world. The city got its name from a beautiful waterfall on the Elk River nearby.

An important person who lived here was Prudence Crandall. She was an educator from Connecticut. In the 1830s, she started a school for African-American girls and young women. Prudence and her brother Hezekiah both settled in Elk Falls. They passed away here and are buried in the town's cemetery.
