Elkmont is a small town located in Limestone County, Alabama, in the United States. It's part of a larger area called the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area. In 2010, about 434 people lived there. The population was a bit higher in 2000, with 470 residents.

History of Elkmont

Elkmont started as a stop on a new railroad line in 1859. It was first called "Fort Hampton." In 1866, its name was changed to "Elkmont" because many elk used to live in the area.

The railroad line eventually became part of the L&N Railroad system. They built the train station, called a depot, in 1887. This old depot is now used as a community center for the town. The railroad tracks are no longer there, but the path is now a walking and biking trail called the Richard Martin Trail. Elkmont officially became a town in 1873.

During the Civil War, a battle took place just south of Elkmont in September 1864. It was called the Battle of Sulphur Creek Trestle. Today, this historic battle site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Geography of Elkmont

Elkmont is located in northern Alabama. It's found where County Road 49 (Upper Fort Hampton Road) meets the old railroad line, which is now the Richard Martin Trail. The town is a few miles north of Athens and a short distance south of the Alabama-Tennessee state line.

Interstate 65 passes to the east of Elkmont, and the Elk River flows to the west. A state road, State Route 127, also runs along part of Elkmont's western border.

The U.S. Census Bureau states that Elkmont covers an area of about 1.6 square miles (4.2 square kilometers), and all of it is land.
