Elkview is a small community in West Virginia, United States. It is located in Kanawha County. In 2010, about 1,222 people lived there.

Elkview gets its name from the Elk River. This river flows into the larger Kanawha River. The community is nestled between the town of Clendenin and the city of Charleston.

You can reach Elkview using major highways. Interstate 79, also known as the "Jennings Randolph Expressway," has an exit for Elkview. U.S. Route 119 also goes through the area.

A shopping center was built near Interstate 79. It has a hotel, a grocery store called Kroger, and several fast food restaurants. During a big flood in 2016, many people were stuck at this shopping center. The bridge that connected it to the interstate was washed away by the floodwaters.

Elkview's Location and Size

Elkview is about 12 miles east of Charleston. Its exact location is 38.437810 degrees north and -81.482007 degrees west.

The community covers a total area of about 1.8 square miles (4.6 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 1.7 square miles (4.4 square kilometers), is land. The remaining 0.1 square miles (0.2 square kilometers) is water.

Local Education

Herbert Hoover High School is named after former U.S. President Herbert Hoover. The original school building was in Clendenin, a few miles north of Elkview.

However, the school was badly damaged during the 2016 flood. The old building had to be torn down. In 2020, construction began on a new Herbert Hoover High School building right here in Elkview.
