A Look Back: Ellendale's History
Ellendale officially became a recognized place, or "locality," in 1959. This means it was formally named and recorded on maps.
It got its name from the wife of Nicholas John Brown. He was an important government official at the time, serving as the Minister for Lands and Works when the area was being surveyed.
Even before it was officially recognized, Ellendale had a post office. It opened a long time ago, on April 16, 1880.

The Broad River creates the northwestern boundary of the locality. Another important river, the Jones River, flows right through Ellendale, moving from the south to the north.
