Playing Career Highlights
Emanuel Pogatetz was born in Graz, Austria. He started his football journey at Sturm Graz. He then played for several clubs like Kärnten and Bayer Leverkusen. He also had loan spells at Aarau, Grazer AK, and Spartak Moscow. After these loans, he joined Middlesbrough.
During his time on loan at Spartak Moscow, he was involved in an incident where another player was injured. He received a ban, but it was later reduced. This meant he only missed a few games for his new club, Middlesbrough.
Time at Middlesbrough
Middlesbrough signed Pogatetz for £1.8 million. His first game for the club was on 25 August 2005 against Charlton Athletic. He came on as a substitute in the second half.
In March 2006, during a UEFA Cup game, Pogatetz accidentally clashed heads with an opponent. He broke his nose, jaw, and cheekbone. Doctors advised him to rest for three months to avoid further injury. He had successful surgery and was able to return to training for the new season.
He also had surgery for a hernia in April 2006. By July, he was back in training after recovering from both his hernia and cheek injuries.
In the 2006–07 season, Pogatetz played as a central defender. He formed strong partnerships with other defenders. His coach, Steve McClaren, praised him for always giving his best effort.
After the 2007–08 season, Pogatetz became the team captain. He was known for his strong play. In September 2008, he was involved in a challenge during a game against Manchester United. He was sent off and received a three-match ban.
Pogatetz returned to play in October 2009 after a long injury. He suffered another cheekbone injury in a game against Plymouth Argyle. He had to wear a protective mask when he played again in November. Even with a head injury during a game, he continued to play for the full 90 minutes.
Moving to Other Clubs
On 2 June 2010, Pogatetz signed a three-year contract with Hannover 96. He played his first game for them on 21 August, a 2–1 win against Eintracht Frankfurt.

His first goal for Austria came on 6 September 2003, during a Euro 2004 qualifying game against the Netherlands. He scored to make the game 1–1, but Austria eventually lost 3–1.
In October 2005, he was sent off in a game against Northern Ireland. Both he and an opponent were dismissed from the game.
In September 2006, Pogatetz was temporarily banned from playing for his country. This happened after he shared his opinions about the coach and captain following some international matches.
In 2008, he was part of the Austria team that co-hosted Euro 2008 with Switzerland. He played in all three of Austria's games in the tournament.
In March 2009, Pogatetz was named captain of the Austrian national team. However, he had several injuries that kept him from playing for much of 2009 and 2010. Another player, Christian Fuchs, took over as captain. Pogatetz played his last international game in 2014.
