Emanuel Pogatetz (born 16 January 1983) is an Austrian football coach and a former player. He is currently an assistant coach at the Premier League club Crystal Palace.

As a player, he was a strong defender. He played for many clubs like FC Kärnten, Bayer Leverkusen, Middlesbrough, and Hannover 96. He also played for the Austrian national team at different age levels. People called him "Mad Dog" because of his tough and determined style of play on the field.

Emanuel Pogatetz was born in Graz, Austria. His football journey began at Sturm Graz. He then moved to Kärnten and later to Bayer Leverkusen.

He spent time on loan at different clubs. These included Aarau, Grazer AK, and Spartak Moscow. After these loans, he joined Middlesbrough.

Playing for Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough signed Pogatetz for about £1.8 million. His first game for the club was on 25 August 2005. He came on as a substitute in a match against Charlton Athletic.

In March 2006, Pogatetz got a serious injury during a game. He broke his nose, jaw, and cheekbone. Doctors warned him to rest to protect his eyesight. He had surgery and made a good recovery. He was able to return to training later that year.

He also had surgery for a hernia in April 2006. By July, he was back training with his team.

In the 2006–07 season, Pogatetz played as a central defender. He formed strong partnerships with other defenders. His coach, Steve McClaren, praised him for always giving his best.

After the 2007–08 season, Pogatetz became the team captain. He was known for his strong play. In October 2009, he returned to play after a long injury. He had to wear a special protective mask for his cheekbone. Even with an injury during a game, he kept playing for the full 90 minutes.

Later Club Teams

On 2 June 2010, Pogatetz joined Hannover 96. He signed a three-year contract with them. His first game for Hannover was a 2–1 win at home.

In June 2012, Pogatetz moved to VfL Wolfsburg. He played his first game for them in August 2012. He even helped set up a goal in that match.

Loan to West Ham United

In January 2013, Pogatetz went on loan to West Ham United. He played his first game for them in February. He came on as a substitute in a 1–0 win. He played a few more games before going back to Wolfsburg.

Moving to 1. FC Nürnberg

On 2 July 2013, Pogatetz joined 1. FC Nürnberg. He played 23 league games for them and scored one goal.

Time with Columbus Crew

In September 2014, Pogatetz signed with Columbus Crew. This team plays in Major League Soccer in the United States. He played for two seasons with the club, making 24 appearances.

Playing for Union Berlin

On 5 January 2016, Pogatetz signed with Union Berlin. He played six games during the 2016–17 season. His contract was not extended after that.

Return to Austria with LASK

In May 2017, Pogatetz decided to return to his home country, Austria. He joined the club LASK.

Juniors OÖ

In December 2019, it was announced that Pogatetz would play for FC Juniors OÖ starting in 2020. He also started working there as a coach.

Emanuel Pogatetz first played for the Austrian national team on 18 May 2002. His first international goal came on 6 September 2003. He scored against the Netherlands in a qualifying game.

In 2008, he was part of the Austrian team that played in Euro 2008. Austria was one of the host countries for this big tournament. He played in all three of Austria's games.

In March 2009, Pogatetz was named captain of the Austrian national team. However, he had several injuries that kept him from playing. His last game for Austria was in 2014.

Coaching Career

St. Pölten

On 10 June 2021, Pogatetz became an assistant coach at St. Pölten. Before this, he was an assistant coach at LASK. He left this role in 2023.

Crystal Palace

In February 2024, Pogatetz joined the coaching team at Crystal Palace. This is a club in the Premier League, which is the top football league in England. He works with manager Oliver Glasner.
