Emerald Lilly Fennell (born 1 October 1985) is an English actress, filmmaker, and writer. She has won many awards. These include an Academy Award and two BAFTA Awards. She was also nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards and three Golden Globe Awards.
Fennell first became known for her roles in historical films. These include Albert Nobbs (2011) and Anna Karenina (2012). She became very popular for her role in the TV show Call the Midwife (2013–2017). She also played Camilla Parker-Bowles in the Netflix series The Crown (2019–2020). For The Crown, she was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award.
As a writer and director, Fennell was the main writer and producer for season two of the TV show Killing Eve (2019). This earned her two Primetime Emmy Award nominations. She directed her first movie, the thriller Promising Young Woman (2020). For this film, she won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. She was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Director. Fennell also wrote the story for Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Cinderella (2021). Her second film as director was the thriller Saltburn (2023).
Early Life and School
Emerald Fennell was born in Hammersmith, London. Her father, Theo Fennell, is a jewellery designer. Her mother, Louise Fennell, is an author.
Emerald's sister, Coco Fennell, is a fashion designer.
Emerald went to Marlborough College, a private school. Then, she studied English at Greyfriars, Oxford university. While there, she acted in university plays. A talent agent saw her acting and helped her start her career.
Career Highlights
Early Acting Roles (2007–2012)
Fennell started acting in 2007. She appeared in a crime TV show called Trial & Retribution. In 2008, she was asked to write a movie script. It was a romantic comedy about teenagers.
She also appeared in other TV shows. These included New Tricks and Any Human Heart in 2010. That same year, she was in her first feature film, Mr Nice.
Fennell starred as Agnes in the TV comedy Chickens (2011–2013). She also had small roles in historical films. These included Albert Nobbs (2011) and Anna Karenina (2012).
Becoming Well-Known (2013–2019)
In 2013, Fennell was in the comedy series Blandings. She also appeared in the TV film The Lady Vanishes. She then became very popular for her role as Nurse Patsy Mount. This was in the BBC One historical drama series Call the Midwife (2013–2017). She even dyed her blonde hair red for the part.
Fennell also wrote children's books. Her first children's fantasy novel was Shiverton Hall in 2013. A second book, The Creeper, came out in 2014. Shiverton Hall was nominated for an award. She also wrote an adult horror book called Monsters in 2015. In 2015, she appeared in the films The Danish Girl and Pan.
In 2016, Fennell wrote two episodes of the TV comedy Drifters. She also acted in one episode. In 2017, she played Ada Lovelace in the TV series Victoria. She also starred as Vanessa Bell in the film Vita & Virginia (2018).
In 2018, Fennell became the head writer for the second season of Killing Eve. This is a spy thriller TV series. She wrote six episodes and was an executive producer. She was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards for her work on Killing Eve.
In 2018, it was announced that Fennell would play Camilla Shand. This was in the third season of the Netflix series The Crown. She continued the role in the fourth season. For this, she earned a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award.
Major Success and New Projects (2020–Present)
In 2019, Fennell announced she would write and direct the film Promising Young Woman. Carey Mulligan starred in the movie. Fennell was seven months pregnant during the filming. The movie was shown at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. It received great reviews from critics.
The film earned five Academy Award nominations. These included Best Picture and Best Director. Fennell won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. She was one of only seven women ever nominated for Best Director. She was also the first British woman to be nominated in that category.
In 2020, Andrew Lloyd Webber announced he would work with Fennell. They created the musical Cinderella. It opened in London in 2021. The musical later moved to Broadway in 2023.
In 2022, actress Ana de Armas said that Fennell helped write the script for the John Wick spin-off film Ballerina. This movie is expected to be released in 2025.
In 2023, Fennell had a small role as Midge in the movie Barbie. Also in 2023, Fennell wrote, produced, and directed her second film, Saltburn. This movie is a dark comedy and thriller. It stars Barry Keoghan and Jacob Elordi. The film received good reviews.
In 2024, she announced her next film would be based on the book Wuthering Heights.
Personal Life
Emerald Fennell is married to Chris Vernon. He is a film and advertising director. They have two children. Their first child, a son, was born in 2019. She announced she was expecting her second child in April 2021.
