What is the Emeryville Crescent Reserve?
The Emeryville Crescent State Marine Reserve protects a marsh that is shaped like a crescent moon. This is how it got its name! A marsh is a type of wetland, which is an area of land covered by shallow water. Marshes are super important because they are home to many different kinds of wildlife.
Location and Size
This marsh stretches for about 103.5 acres (which is about 41.9 hectares). It goes from the eastern part of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge in Oakland all the way to Powell Street in Emeryville. It's located in both Alameda and Contra Costa Counties in California.
Nature in the Marsh
The marsh is a busy place for nature. A creek called Temescal Creek flows into these wetlands near the border of Emeryville and Oakland. This brings fresh water and nutrients to the marsh.
Plants and Challenges
The wetlands are filled with native plants, especially a type called pickleweed. This plant is very important for the marsh ecosystem. However, the marsh faces a challenge from an invasive plant called Spartina, also known as cordgrass. This plant is not native to the area and can take over, harming the natural balance of the marsh. About 2.4 acres (1 hectare) of the wetlands have been affected by Spartina. To help protect the native plants, there are programs that use special herbicides to control the Spartina.
