Emily Jane Browning is an Australian actress and singer. She started her acting career in 1998 in the TV film The Echo of Thunder. After that, she appeared in TV shows like High Flyers (1999) and Blue Heelers (2000–2002).
Her big break came in 2002 with the horror film Ghost Ship. This movie helped her become known to more people. In 2005, Emily won an award for Best Actress for playing Violet Baudelaire in Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004).
Browning is also famous for her roles in films such as The Uninvited (2009) and Sucker Punch (2011). She also starred in the drama Sleeping Beauty (2011) and the historical film Pompeii (2014). For Pompeii, she was named the Breakthrough Performer of The Year at a film festival. From 2017 to 2021, she played Laura Moon in the TV series American Gods. In 2023, she starred in the Australian comedy series Class Of '07.

Early life and education
Emily Jane Browning was born on 7 December 1988 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Her parents are Andrew and Shelley Browning. She has two younger brothers named Nicholas and Matthew.
She went to Hurstbridge Learning Co-op and Eltham High School.
Career
Early roles (1998–2007)
Emily Browning's first acting job was in the 1998 Hallmark Channel movie The Echo of Thunder. Soon after, she got more roles in Australian TV and films. She appeared in the TV series Blue Heelers from 2000 to 2002. She was also in Something in the Air from 2000 to 2001. In 2001, Browning acted alongside Billy Connolly in the film The Man Who Sued God.
Her first American film was Ghost Ship in 2002. For this role, she won an Australian Film Institute Award for Best Young Actress. In 2003, she appeared with Heath Ledger and Orlando Bloom in Ned Kelly. The next year, she worked with Billy Connolly again in Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. In this movie, she played Violet Baudelaire.
In 2006, Browning was in the music video for the band Evermore's song "Light Surrounding You".
Becoming a lead actress (2008–2011)
Browning played the main character in the 2009 horror film The Uninvited. This film was an American version of a South Korean movie called A Tale of Two Sisters. She decided not to try out for the role of Bella Swan in Twilight. She said she was too tired, even though the author of the books, Stephenie Meyer, wanted her for the part.
In 2009, she was chosen to play Babydoll in Zack Snyder's action film Sucker Punch. She took over the role from Amanda Seyfried, who had other filming plans. The movie was filmed in Vancouver and came out on 25 March 2011. Emily also sang in the film.
In February 2010, it was announced that Browning would star in the Australian independent film Sleeping Beauty. Julia Leigh directed this movie. She replaced Mia Wasikowska, who was busy with another film. The movie was shown at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and the Sydney Film Festival. Critics praised Emily's strong performance in the film.
Recent projects (2012–present)
In 2012, Emily Browning took on the role of Florence Carter-Wood in the film Summer in February. This movie is based on a book by Jonathan Smith. In July 2012, Browning was cast in God Help the Girl. This was a musical film by Belle and Sebastian's lead singer, Stuart Murdoch. Emily played Eve and had to sing live in the movie.
Browning also starred in Catherine Hardwicke's film Plush with Cam Gigandet. She replaced Evan Rachel Wood in this role. She also acted with Xavier Samuel in this film. Another movie, Magic Magic, directed by Sebastián Silva, was shown at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.
In 2014, Browning starred in Paul W. S. Anderson's historical film Pompeii. The movie was filmed in Toronto and the city of Pompeii. While the film got mixed reviews, Emily's acting was generally liked. During a break from filming Pompeii, she went back to Australia to make a music video. The video was for the song "No Matter What You Say" by the band Imperial Teen.
In 2015, Browning appeared in the crime thriller Legend. She acted alongside Tom Hardy, who played twin brothers and famous 1960s London gangsters Reggie and Ronnie Kray. Emily played Frances Shea, who was Reggie Kray's first wife.
Browning was cast as Laura Moon in the TV series American Gods. Neil Gaiman, who wrote the book the series is based on, said he was very interested in Emily for the role. In June 2021, it was announced that Browning would replace Anna Paquin in the drama Monica. She is also set to star in the thriller Brightwater.
Personal life
Emily Browning married Eddie O'Keefe in April 2023.
She lives in East Los Angeles, but she still travels back to her hometown in Australia sometimes.
