Emmanuel-Auguste de Cahideuc, also known as Count Dubois de la Motte, was an important French naval officer. He was born in 1683 and passed away in 1764. He became a Vice admiral and fought in several major wars for France.

Emmanuel-Auguste de Cahideuc was born in Rennes, a city in Brittany, France, in 1683. He joined the French navy when he was 15 years old, in 1698. His first job was as a midshipman, which is a junior officer rank.
In 1708, he got his first chance to command a ship. It was a privateer ship called the Argonaute. Privateers were private ships allowed by the government to attack enemy ships. After this, he was promoted to sub-lieutenant.
Fighting in the War of the Spanish Succession
As a sub-lieutenant, Dubois de la Motte took part in the Battle of Rio de Janeiro in 1711. This battle was part of the War of the Spanish Succession. This war was fought to decide who would be the next king of Spain. In 1718, he was honored for his service and became a knight of the Order of Saint-Louis. This was a special award for French military officers.
Rising Through the Ranks
Dubois de la Motte continued to advance in his naval career. In 1738, he was promoted to captain. As a captain, he led three important naval trips to the West Indies. These trips helped France protect its interests in that region.
After his third trip to the West Indies, in 1751, he received another big promotion. He became a Rear-Admiral. At the same time, he was made the governor general of Saint-Domingue. This was a very important French colony, now known as Haiti.
Defending North America
Dubois de la Motte spent a lot of time serving off the coast of North America. He was sent to help defend Louisbourg in 1757. Louisbourg was a key French fortress on Cape Breton Island during the Seven Years' War. This war was a global conflict, also known as the French and Indian War in North America.
Even though he became ill shortly after arriving, his strong naval fleet was very important. His presence delayed the British from taking control of the island for a whole year. The British tried to capture Louisbourg in the Louisbourg Expedition (1757) but failed because of his efforts.
Later Life and Legacy
By 1758, Dubois de la Motte was 75 years old, and his active career was mostly over. However, he still played a part in one more important battle. He helped fight off a British landing near Saint-Malo in the Battle of Saint Cast. This battle was successful in pushing back the British forces.
Emmanuel-Auguste de Cahideuc, who was first knighted in 1718, died in Rennes, France in 1764. He passed away as a knight grand cross and a Vice-Admiral, which are very high honors in the French navy.
