Emmanuel Philibert of Savoy (1588–1624) facts for kids

Emmanuel Philibert of Savoy (born April 16, 1588 – died August 4, 1624) was an important prince from the House of Savoy. He was the third son of Charles Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy. Emmanuel Philibert served as the Viceroy of Sicily from 1622 until 1624.
Early Life and Career
Emmanuel Philibert was born in Turin, a city in Italy. His father was Charles Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy, and his mother was Infanta Catherine Michelle of Spain.
When he was 12 years old, Emmanuel Philibert was expected to join the Church. He became part of the Knights Hospitaller, a very old order of knights. However, he later decided to become a soldier instead.
In 1603, Emmanuel Philibert and his older brothers, Philip Emmanuel and Victor Amadeus, traveled to Madrid, Spain. They went there to finish their education. After his brother Philip Emmanuel passed away, Emmanuel Philibert and Victor Amadeus returned to Savoy in 1606. Victor Amadeus then became the next in line to rule.
Service to Spain and Viceroy of Sicily
In 1610, Emmanuel Philibert went back to Madrid. He began working for King Philip III of Spain. The king made him the Grand Admiral of Spain, which was a very important naval position.
Later, under the next king, Philip IV of Spain, Emmanuel Philibert received an even bigger role. In 1622, he was named viceroy of Sicily. A viceroy is like a governor who rules a country or province as the king's representative.
His time as Viceroy ended when he died at the age of 36. He passed away during a plague outbreak in 1624. Emmanuel Philibert was buried in a special crypt in the Norman Palace in Palermo, Sicily.
Famous Painting
The famous artist Anthony van Dyck painted a portrait of Emmanuel Philibert in 1623. Van Dyck was invited to Palermo by the Viceroy himself. This painting is now kept at the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London, England.
