Enda Oates, born in 1962, is a well-known Irish actor. He has acted in plays, movies, and TV shows. Many people in Ireland know him from his roles as Reverend George Black in the TV series Glenroe and as Barreller Casey in the comedy show Upwardly Mobile.

Enda Oates was born in County Roscommon, Ireland, in 1962. He moved to Dublin in 1981, where he still lives today. Before becoming an actor, he worked as a civil servant for five years. Enda is married to Louise, and they have one son. He also loves horses and has even been on TV shows about them!

Early Acting Days

Enda Oates became a professional actor in 1986. He won the "Newcomer of the Year Award" from the Evening Herald newspaper that year, sharing it with another actor named Aidan Gillen. Enda also helped open the Strokestown International Poetry Festival.

TV Shows and Movies

In 1989, Enda got a big role as Reverend George Black in the TV series Glenroe. He played this character from 1989 to 1997, and it made him very famous in Ireland.

In 1990, he had a small part in the movie Fools of Fortune. This film was about a family during a time of conflict in Ireland called the Troubles. In 1994, Enda played "The Garda" (a police officer) in the movie A Man of No Importance, which starred famous actors like Albert Finney and Michael Gambon.

From 1995 to 1998, he played Barreller Casey in the Irish comedy series Upwardly Mobile. In 1998, he appeared in the movie St. Ives and an episode of The Ambassador TV series.

In 2000, Enda Oates was in three episodes of Trí Scéal and played "Brian" in the movie Ordinary Decent Criminal. This film was about a famous Irish crime boss and featured big stars like Kevin Spacey and Colin Farrell. He also had a small role in the comedy film An Everlasting Piece that year. In 2003, Enda appeared in the movie Veronica Guerin, which was about an Irish journalist who was sadly murdered. Cate Blanchett played the main character.

Enda Oates won a Best Male Performance award at the Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTA) in 2015. He won for his role as Pete in the RTÉ TV drama Fair City.

Enda has performed in many plays. In 1988, he was in Juno and the Paycock at the Gate Theatre in Dublin, and this play even went to Broadway in New York City! In 1989, he acted in Big Maggie at the Abbey Theatre.

Critics have praised Enda's acting. In 2006, the Irish Times newspaper said his work as MacDuff in Alan Stanford's play MacBeth was "thoroughly impressive." In 2007, The Irish Independent newspaper mentioned his "poignant visit" as Master Boyle in the play Philadelphia, Here I Come!.

In 2008, Enda played Shylock in The Merchant of Venice at the Helix Theatre. The Irish Times called his performance "riveting." Another newspaper, The Irish Independent, said he "radiated suppressed force of character" in the play Further than the Furthest Thing.
