History of Englewood
Early Life and Settlements
Long ago, people from the Weeden Island culture and Safety Harbor culture lived in the area that is now Englewood. Scientists have found their ancient pottery here.
One of the first European settlers was William Goff. He arrived in 1878 by boat from Tampa. He settled a piece of land a few miles south of where Englewood is today. A post office was set up in the area on July 3, 1895.
Farming and Fishing in Early Englewood
In the mid-1890s, very cold weather hit Florida. This "Great Freeze" in 1894, 1895, and 1896 destroyed many orange trees. Because of this, by 1897, fishing became the main product for Englewood.
How Englewood Got Its Name
The official plan for Englewood was created on August 17, 1896. The land was divided into home lots and larger grove lots. These grove lots were likely for growing citrus fruits. Three brothers developed the area. They named it Englewood after their hometown, Englewood, Chicago. Some streets, like Dearborn, Harvard, and Yale, are also named after streets in Chicago.
The Englewood Inn and Growth
In 1898, the Englewood Inn opened. It was a fairly large hotel with 16 rooms. Many visitors from the northern states stayed there. Sadly, the hotel burned down in 1909.
Both Sarasota and Charlotte Counties were formed in 1921. At first, Englewood was mostly in Sarasota County. As it grew, it spread out to be almost equally in both counties.
Recent Weather Events
In 2024, Englewood faced severe weather. Heavy rain from Hurricane Helene caused flooding. Less than two weeks later, Hurricane Milton brought a strong storm surge. Many houses were damaged by Helene and then destroyed by Milton.
