Ephedra antisyphilitica is a unique plant that grows naturally in the southern Great Plains of the United States. You can find it in states like Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas. It also grows in northeastern Mexico, in areas such as Nuevo León, Coahuila, and San Luis Potosí. This plant is a type of Ephedra, which are often called "Mormon Tea" or "Desert Tea" plants.
It's important not to mix up this plant with another one that used to have a similar name. In 1871, a different plant from the southwestern US and Baja California was also called Ephedra antisyphilitica. However, the name given by Meyer in 1846 for our plant came first, so it has priority. The plant Watson named is now known as Ephedra nevadensis.

Understanding Plant DNA: Genome Size
Every living thing, including plants, has a special set of instructions called a genome. This genome is made of DNA and tells the plant how to grow and what it will look like. The "genome size" is basically how much DNA is in one set of these instructions.
How Big is the Ephedra antisyphilitica Genome?
Scientists have measured the genome size of Ephedra antisyphilitica. It's about 38.34 picograms (pg). A picogram is a tiny unit of weight, showing how small DNA is! This is actually the largest genome ever found for any gymnosperm. Gymnosperms are a group of plants that include conifers, like pine trees.
What Does "Octoploid" Mean?
Even though its genome is very large, Ephedra antisyphilitica is a special kind of plant called an octoploid. This means it has eight complete sets of its genome in each cell, instead of the usual one or two sets that most living things have. If you look at just one set of its genome (called the monoploid genome), it's much smaller, only about 9.58 pg. So, it's like having eight copies of a book, which makes the total library very big, even if each book isn't the biggest on its own.
