Epworth is a small city in Dubuque County, Iowa, United States. It's part of the larger Dubuque, Iowa area. In 2020, about 2,023 people lived there. This was more than the 1,428 people who lived there in 2000.

History of Epworth

Epworth started as a town in 1855. It was named after a town in England. That English town was the birthplace of John Wesley, a famous religious leader. Epworth officially became a city on November 20, 1879.

Epworth is located at 42°26′45″N 90°55′52″W / 42.44583°N 90.93111°W / 42.44583; -90.93111. This means it's in the northern part of the United States.

The city covers a total area of about 1.56 square miles (4.04 square kilometers). All of this area is land. Epworth is located along U.S. Route 20. It is about 12 miles (19 km) west of Dubuque.

In 2020, there were 2,023 people living in Epworth. There were 699 households and 504 families. The city had about 1,137.7 people per square mile. Most of the people living in Epworth were White (90.9%). There were also people who identified as Black or African American, Native American, Asian, and people from two or more races. About 1.9% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.

The average age in Epworth was 35.5 years. About 28% of the people were under 20 years old. The population was almost equally split between males (50%) and females (50%).

2010 Census Information

In 2010, Epworth had 1,860 people. There were 643 households and 488 families. The population density was about 1,192.3 people per square mile. Most residents (93.9%) were White. There were also smaller groups of African American and Asian residents. About 0.4% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.

The average age in 2010 was 33.1 years. About 28.7% of residents were under 18 years old. The city had slightly more males (51.5%) than females (48.5%).

Economy

Epworth is the fifth-largest city in Dubuque County. Many new homes have been built here. A lot of people who live in Epworth work in nearby Dubuque or other communities. The city's population grew quite a bit between 2000 and 2006.

Public Schools

All public school students in Epworth attend schools in the Western Dubuque Community School District. Younger students go to Epworth Elementary School for kindergarten through fifth grade. Middle school students attend Drexler Middle School in nearby Farley. High school students go to Western Dubuque High School, which is located in Epworth.

Private Schools

Epworth also has private school options. Seton Catholic Elementary School-Epworth is part of a larger Catholic school system. Students in grades 1-2 go to the Epworth building. Students in grades 3-5 attend a building in Peosta, Iowa. Grades 6-8 go to a building in Farley. For high school, private school students can attend Beckman High School in Dyersville, Iowa or Wahlert High School in Dubuque, Iowa.

Colleges and Universities

Epworth is home to Divine Word College. This is a Roman Catholic seminary, which is a special college for people studying to become priests.
