Era is a small community in Cooke County, Texas. It's not a city, but a community without its own local government. In 2000, about 200 people lived there. Era is part of the larger Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex area.

History of Era
Era was named after Era Hargrave, the daughter of one of the first people to settle there. People first settled in this area in the early 1850s. A merchant named J. N. Gist planned out the town. The post office opened in 1881. Soon, Era had a hotel, a blacksmith shop, a cotton gin (a machine that separates cotton fibers), many shops, and three churches.
By 1990, Era had a post office, a Masonic lodge (a type of community group), and several shops and churches. About 200 people lived there then. The population grew to 400 by 2010. Today, Era is known for its farming. In 1973, Era won the Texas Community Improvement Program award.
About seven miles west of Era is the Liberman Broadcasting Tower Era. This tower is one of the tallest structures on Earth! As of 2007, it was the tallest structure in Texas. It's named for being near Era, even though it's closer to Rosston and Leo.
In 1860, the Butterfield Overland Mail (an old mail delivery service) had a station called Davidsen's Station about four miles west of Era. In 1921, Era also had a branch of the Cooke County Library. The Thomason-Scott House in Era is a special building listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its history.
Geography and Climate
Era is located where two roads, Farm to Market Road 922 and Farm to Market Road 51, meet. It is about 12 miles (19 km) southwest of Gainesville. Era is also about 30 miles (48 km) northwest of Denton.
Era's Climate
The weather in Era usually has hot, humid summers. Winters are generally mild to cool. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Era has a humid subtropical climate. This means it gets a lot of rain and has warm temperatures for most of the year.
Sometimes, tornadoes have hit Era. On April 26, 1994, a small tornado touched down but caused no damage. On April 10, 2001, an F1 tornado caused some damage to roofs, trees, and signs. Another F1 tornado on March 21, 2022, caused minor damage to trees and a gas station roof. The most recent tornado hit Era on May 25, 2024. This EF1 tornado damaged trees and buildings.
Education in Era
In 1878, Judge J.M. Lindsay gave six acres (2.4 ha) of land for a school. By 1990, Era had several schools. Today, students in the community attend schools in the Era Independent School District.
After it was started in 1897, Era Institute offered classes from elementary school all the way up to college levels.
Notable People from Era
- J. Charles Kelley: He was an important archaeologist who studied ancient cultures.
- Robert Ewing Thomason: He was a speaker for the Texas House of Representatives. He also served as the mayor of El Paso and was a member of Congress and a federal judge.
