Eric Otto Valdemar Lemming was a famous Swedish athlete. He was born on February 22, 1880, and passed away on June 5, 1930. Eric was a master of track and field sports, especially throwing and jumping events. He competed in four Olympic Games: 1900, 1906, 1908, and 1912. His best sport was the javelin throw. He won many gold medals in this event and even set several world records! His final record, 62.32 meters, was the first official world record recognized for the javelin throw.

Eric Lemming's Early Olympic Adventures

Eric Lemming started his Olympic journey in 1900. The javelin throw was not yet an official event then. Even so, he showed his talent in other sports. He placed fourth in the hammer throw, high jump, and pole vault.

Success at the 1906 Intercalated Games

In 1906, Eric competed in the Intercalated Games in Athens. This was a special Olympic event held between the main Games. Here, he won a gold medal in the javelin throw. He also earned three bronze medals! These were for the shot put, tug of war, and an old event called the ancient pentathlon. This pentathlon included a standing long jump, discus throw, javelin throw, a 192-meter run, and a Greco-Roman wrestling match. He also finished fourth in discus throw and stone throwing.

Becoming the Javelin King of the Olympics

Eric Lemming continued his amazing performance in the javelin throw.

Winning Gold in 1908

At the 1908 Olympics in London, Eric won two gold medals. He won in two different types of javelin throw events. He also competed in the hammer throw, finishing eighth.

More Gold in 1912

Eric won another gold medal in the javelin throw at his last Olympics in 1912. This event took place in Stockholm, Sweden. His half-brother, Oscar, also competed, placing tenth in the pentathlon.

Setting World Records in Javelin

Eric Lemming was not just an Olympic champion. He also set many world records in the javelin throw. He held these records between 1899 and 1912. His last record, a throw of 62.32 meters, was very important. It was officially recognized by the International Association of Athletics Federations as the first official world record for the men's javelin throw.

Eric Lemming passed away on June 5, 1930, when he was 50 years old. He is remembered as a true pioneer and champion in the world of track and field.
