Eric Wendell Shaw, born on September 17, 1971, is a former American football player. He was a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL). Eric played for the Cincinnati Bengals for three seasons. He first went to Florida State University before moving to Louisiana Tech University. The Bengals chose him in the 1992 NFL draft. From 1992 to 1994, Shaw played in 28 games for the Bengals. He started 10 of those games.

Early Life and High School Football

Eric Wendell Shaw was born in Pensacola, Florida, on September 17, 1971. He played high school football at Pensacola High School. He was a defensive end and outside linebacker.

In 1987, during his junior year, he was named first-team 4A all-state. This means he was one of the best players in his state for his age group. In 1988, his senior year, he made 113 tackles and 24 sacks. He was again named first-team 4A all-state. Shaw was also recognized as an All-American by Parade, USA Today, and Super Prep magazines.

College Football Journey

Shaw planned to play college football for the Florida State Seminoles. However, he could not play in his first year, 1989. This was because his SAT scores were too low.

He then moved to play for the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. He played there during the 1990 and 1991 seasons.

Professional Football Career

The Cincinnati Bengals picked Eric Shaw in the 12th round of the 1992 NFL draft. He was the 310th player chosen overall. He officially joined the team on July 20.

He was later moved to the Bengals' practice squad. On October 13, he joined the main team. In 1992, he played in 11 games for the Bengals, starting one. In 1993, he played in 14 games and started nine. He made 49 tackles and recovered one fumble that season. He played in the first three games of the 1994 season. He made one solo tackle and one assisted tackle. The Bengals released him on September 22, 1994.

On February 28, 1995, Shaw signed with the Kansas City Chiefs. He was released by the Chiefs on July 19, 1995.

In 1999, he tried to make a comeback with the Shreveport Knights. This team was part of the Regional Football League, which did not last long. His comeback ended after just one game because of a neck injury.

Life After Playing: Coaching Career

After his time as a professional football player, Eric Shaw became an assistant football coach. He coached at Lafayette High School in Lexington, Kentucky.

In 2013, he became the head coach at Lafayette High School. He coached there until the end of the 2021 season. During his time as head coach, his team had a record of 45 wins and 59 losses. He stepped down from his coaching role after the 2021 season.
