Erick Thohir (born May 30, 1970) is an Indonesian businessman and politician. Since 2019, he has served as the Minister of State Owned Enterprises in Indonesia. This means he helps manage companies owned by the government.
He is also a big name in the world of sports. He is the chairman of the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI). In the past, he owned the famous Italian soccer team Inter Milan and the American soccer club D.C. United.
Today, he is a co-owner of the English soccer team Oxford United and the Indonesian team Persis Solo. He is also a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which organizes the Olympic Games.

Early Life and Education
Erick Thohir was born in Jakarta, Indonesia. His father, Teddy Thohir, was a successful businessman who co-owned the car company Astra International. His family has a mixed background, including Chinese and Sundanese heritage from West Java.
For his higher education, Thohir went to the United States. He earned a master's degree in business from National University in 1993.
Business and Media Career
When Thohir returned to Indonesia, he started the Mahaka Group. This is a large company that focuses on media and entertainment.
In 2001, his company bought Republika, a major newspaper in Indonesia. He used his knowledge of media to lead the newspaper. He also started other media businesses, including:
- The television station Jak TV
- Radio stations like 98.7 Gen FM and 101 Jak FM
- An outdoor advertising company
In 2011, he became a co-owner of the TV network tvOne and the news website VIVA.co.id. He also served as the President Director of the TV station ANTV from 2014 to 2019.
Government and Politics
In 2018, the president of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, chose Thohir to lead his campaign to be re-elected. After the president won, Thohir was appointed as the Minister of State Owned Enterprises in 2019.
In February 2023, Thohir was elected as the new chairman of the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI). His job is to lead and improve soccer in the country.
Involvement in Sports
Erick Thohir is famous for buying and managing sports teams around the world. He has been involved with both basketball and soccer.
Basketball
In 2011, Thohir became part of a group that bought the Philadelphia 76ers, an NBA team. The group also included the actor Will Smith and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
He also owns the Indonesian basketball team Satria Muda. He has held important roles in basketball organizations, including:
- President of the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA)
- Chairman of the Indonesian Olympic Committee from 2015 to 2019
Soccer
Thohir has owned several major soccer clubs. He was the chairman and owner of Inter Milan in Italy from 2013 to 2018. He also owned D.C. United in the United States until 2018.
