The Eritrean butterflyfish (Chaetodon paucifasciatus) is a beautiful marine fish. It is also known as the crown butterflyfish. This fish is a type of butterflyfish, part of the Chaetodontidae family.

You can mostly find this fish in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Sometimes, it has also been seen near East Africa. It can grow up to 14 centimeters (about 5.5 inches) long.

What it Looks Like

The Eritrean butterflyfish has a white body with black V-shaped patterns, like chevrons. It has a bright red area that starts near its back fin. This red color stretches all the way to the end of its bottom fin.

A red stripe also runs up and down its tail fin. It has black stripes over its eyes. There is also a black "crown" mark on its head, which has a white border.

Where it Lives and What it Does

Eritrean butterflyfish are usually found in pairs. Sometimes, you might see them in small groups. They like to live near coral reefs and rocky areas.

They swim in waters from 1 meter to 30 meters deep. These fish are oviparous, which means they lay eggs. When they breed, they often form pairs and stay together.

What it Eats

This butterflyfish enjoys a varied diet. They feed on tiny coral polyps. They also eat gorgonians, which are soft corals.

Their diet includes algae, which are like sea plants. They also munch on small polychaete worms and tiny crustaceans.

Eritrean Butterflyfish in Aquariums

Many people like to keep the Eritrean butterflyfish in home aquariums. They tend to do well in captivity. This makes them a popular choice for fish hobbyists.

How Scientists Group These Fish

The Eritrean butterflyfish is part of a special group of "crowned" butterflyfishes. These fish look very similar. They all have dark, forward-pointing V-shapes on their bodies.

They also usually have a black and white "crown" spot on their heads. Their back parts are often yellow or red. Other fish in this group include the Seychelles butterflyfish and the Atoll butterflyfish. The pearlscale butterflyfish is also related.

Scientists use DNA sequence studies to understand how fish are related. This helps them group fish into families and sub-groups. The "crowned" Chaetodon fish are a clear group. However, their exact family tree is still being studied.

Sometimes, scientists place these fish in a subgenus called Exornator. Other times, they are in Rhombochaetodon. It's like trying to figure out the different branches of a very big family tree!
