Erma is a small community in New Jersey, United States. It is located in Cape May County, within Lower Township. Erma is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area that the government tracks for population information, even though it's not an official town or city.
In 2020, about 2,031 people lived in Erma. This number was a little lower than the 2,134 people counted in 2010.

Geography of Erma
Erma is located in the southern part of New Jersey. The United States Census Bureau says that Erma covers about 3.36 square miles (8.7 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. Only a small part, about 0.10 square miles (0.25 square kilometers), is water.

In 2010, there were 2,134 people living in Erma. These people lived in 821 homes. About 596 of these were families. The community had about 655 people per square mile.
Most people in Erma were White (about 95.74%). There were also smaller groups of Black or African American, Native American, Asian, and Pacific Islander residents. Some people were from other races or had mixed racial backgrounds. About 2.62% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.
Many homes (55.9%) were married couples living together. About 26.6% of homes had children under 18. Around 9.9% of homes had someone living alone who was 65 or older. The average home had about 2.59 people.

Getting Around Erma
The main road that goes through Erma is U.S. Route 9. This road helps people travel to and from the community.
The Cape May Airport is also nearby. Even though it has an Erma mailing address, the airport itself is not actually inside the Erma census-designated place. It is located in Lower Township.
Schools in Erma
Students in Erma attend schools in two different districts. For younger students, from pre-Kindergarten to sixth grade, they go to schools in the Lower Township School District.
For older students, from middle school to high school, they attend schools in the Lower Cape May Regional School District (LCMR). This district runs Teitelman Middle School and Lower Cape May Regional High School. The LCMR district's schools are often described as being in Erma, even if they are just outside the official CDP boundaries.
There are several elementary schools for younger students:
- David C. Douglass Memorial Elementary School (pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten) is in Villas.
- Carl T. Mitnick (grades 1–2), Maud Abrams (grades 3–4), and Sandman Consolidated (grades 5–6) are in Cold Spring.
Students can also choose to go to Cape May County Technical High School. This school is in the Cape May Court House area. It offers special programs for students from all over Cape May County.
Famous People from Erma
Erma has been home to some notable people:
- Charles W. Sandman Jr. (1921–1985) was a politician. He represented New Jersey in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1967 to 1975.
- Matt Szczur (born 1989) is a professional baseball player.
