Ernst, Prince of Leiningen (born 9 November 1830 – died 5 April 1904) was a German prince. He was also a respected officer in the British Royal Navy.

Life of Prince Ernst
Ernst Leopold was the older son of Carl, Prince of Leiningen. His mother was Countess Marie von Klebelsberg-Thumburg. Prince Carl was the half-brother of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. This made Ernst Leopold a cousin to the British Queen.
Ernst Leopold joined the Royal Navy in 1849. He served in important conflicts. These included the Second Burma War. He also fought in the Crimean War. In the Crimean War, he took part in battles along the Danube River and in the Baltic Sea.
He became a lieutenant in 1855. He served on ships like HMS Duke of Wellington and HMS Cossack. In 1860, he was promoted to captain. He then commanded HMS Magicienne. Later, he commanded the royal yacht, HMY Victoria and Albert. From 1885 to 1887, he was a senior commander in the navy. He became a full Admiral in 1887. He retired from the Navy in 1895.
Becoming a Prince
When his father died in 1856, Ernst Leopold became the Prince of Leiningen. He also gained a seat in the parliaments of Bavaria, Hesse, and Baden. His family owned land in these areas.
In 1863, the British government suggested him as a possible king for Greece. However, Prince Ernst chose not to accept the offer. The throne eventually went to Prince William of Denmark. He became King George I. Prince Ernst died in Amorbach in 1904. His son, Emich, became the next Prince of Leiningen.
Family Life
On 11 September 1858, Prince Ernst married Princess Marie of Baden. They were married in Karlsruhe. Princess Marie was the daughter of Leopold, Grand Duke of Baden.
Prince Ernst and Princess Marie had two children:
- Princess Alberta Victoria of Leiningen (born 23 July 1863 – died 30 August 1901).
- Emich, Prince of Leiningen (born 18 January 1866 – died 18 July 1939). Emich married Princess Feodore of Hohenlohe-Langenburg in 1894. They had five children together.
Awards and Recognition
Prince Ernst received many important awards during his life. These awards came from different countries. They recognized his service and achievements. Some of his honors included medals for his military service. He also received high-ranking orders from the United Kingdom, Germany, and other European nations.
