Erwin Gutawa Sumapraja, born on May 16, 1962, is a famous Indonesian composer. He started his music journey in 1985 with the jazz band Karimata. Later, in 1991, he became an independent composer. Erwin Gutawa won the Midnight Sun Song Festival in Finland in 1992 with singer Ruth Sahanaya. He also received the Anugerah Musik Indonesia award in 2001 for being the best music arranger for his concert, Rockestra.

Early Life and Music Start
Erwin Gutawa was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, on May 16, 1962. When he was a child, he loved playing basketball and association football. He also started playing music early on a show called Bina Musika. This show was on Televisi Republik Indonesia.
As a teenager, he kept playing music with his friends. After finishing high school, Erwin Gutawa studied architecture. He earned a degree from the University of Indonesia.
Becoming a Professional Musician
In the early 1980s, Erwin Gutawa worked as a sound arranger for a TV show. His professional music career began in 1985. He joined the jazz band Karimata as a bassist. He played alongside talented musicians like Candra Darusman and Aminoto Kosin.
With Karimata, he performed at the famous North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague. This happened in the same year he joined the band. During this time, he also worked as an arranger and producer for other singers.
Leading His Own Orchestra
After Karimata broke up in 1991, Erwin Gutawa started his own orchestra. He began working as a full-time composer. Besides writing music, he also organized big concerts for other artists.
On November 3, 2000, Gutawa put on a huge concert called Rockestra. This event featured popular rock bands like Slank and Gigi. An orchestra of 85 musicians played at the concert. It was held at the Jakarta Convention Center.
His Amazing Concerts
On May 16, 2002, Erwin Gutawa celebrated his 40th birthday. He held his first solo concert, called Konser EG. Many famous singers performed with him, including Chrisye and Ruth Sahanaya. The concert took place at the Jakarta Convention Center.
Since then, he has held many more concerts. These include The Spirit of Ramadhan in 2008. He also held a special concert for his daughter, Gita Gutawa, in 2011. It was called A Masterpiece of Erwin Gutawa.
In 2005, Gutawa traveled to London, England. He worked as a conductor with the London Symphony Orchestra. This was at the famous Royal Albert Hall. In 2010, Erwin Gutawa was chosen to be a judge for the sixth season of Indonesian Idol.
Life Outside Music
Erwin Gutawa is married to Lufti Adriani, also known as Lulu. They have two children together. Their names are Aluna Sagita and Aura Aria Gutawa. When he is not making music, Erwin Gutawa enjoys cycling. He also loves home cooking, especially making delicious Indonesian food.
Awards and Recognition
In 1992, Erwin Gutawa and Ruth Sahanaya's song "Kaulah Segalanya" won an award. It won the 5th Midnight Sun Song Festival in Finland. In 2001, he won the Anugerah Musik Indonesia award. This was for being the best music arranger for his album Rockestra.
