Erwin Gutawa Sumapraja (born May 16, 1962) is a talented Indonesian composer and music arranger. He started his amazing music journey in 1985. First, he joined a jazz band called Karimata. Later, in 1991, he became an independent composer.
As a composer, Erwin Gutawa achieved international success. In 1992, he won the Midnight Sun Song Festival in Finland. He won this award with singer Ruth Sahanaya. In 2001, he received the Anugerah Musik Indonesia award. This was for being the best music arranger for his concert, Rockestra.

Erwin Gutawa's Early Life and Career Beginnings
Erwin Gutawa was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, on May 16, 1962. When he was a child, he loved playing basketball and association football. He also started playing music early on. He performed on a TV show called Bina Musika. This show was on Televisi Republik Indonesia (TVRI).
As a teenager, he continued to play music with his friends. After finishing high school, Gutawa studied architecture. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Indonesia.
Starting His Professional Music Journey
In the early 1980s, Gutawa worked as a sound arranger. He worked for the TVRI series Telerama. His professional music career truly began in 1985. He joined the jazz band Karimata as a bassist. He played alongside other talented musicians.
With Karimata, he performed at the famous North Sea Jazz Festival. This festival was held in The Hague in the Netherlands that same year. During this time, he also worked as an arranger and producer. He helped other singers create their music.
Becoming an Independent Composer
Karimata disbanded in 1991. After that, Gutawa decided to form his own orchestra. He then focused on working as a composer. Besides writing music, Gutawa also organized big concerts for other artists.

His First Solo Concert
On May 16, 2002, Erwin Gutawa celebrated his 40th birthday. He marked this special day by holding his first solo concert, called Konser EG. It was held at the Plenary Hall of the Jakarta Convention Center. Many famous singers and bands performed with him. These included Chrisye, Ruth Sahanaya, Krisdayanti, Sheila on 7, and Slank.

Working with the London Symphony Orchestra
In 2005, Gutawa traveled to London, England. There, he had the incredible opportunity to work as a conductor. He conducted the famous London Symphony Orchestra. This special event took place at the Royal Albert Hall.
Judging Indonesian Idol
In 2010, Erwin Gutawa was chosen to be a judge. He joined the judging panel for the sixth season of Indonesian Idol. This popular TV show helps find new singing talents.
