Esperance is a town located in Schoharie County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 1,806 people lived here. The town got its name from its main village, which was named "Esperance." This word means "hope" in French.
The Town of Esperance includes a smaller area called the Village of Esperance. This town is in the northeastern part of Schoharie County. It is located to the west of Schenectady.

History of Esperance
People first started settling in the Esperance area around the year 1729.
The village of Esperance became an official village in 1818. It was re-established in 1835. This happened before the larger Town of Esperance was officially created.
The Town of Esperance was officially formed in 1846. It was created from a part of the nearby Town of Schoharie.
Geography and Location
The Town of Esperance covers about 20 square miles (51.9 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.
The eastern border of the town is partly marked by the Schoharie Creek. This creek also forms part of the border with Schenectady County. To the north, the town borders Montgomery County. Another stream, Cripplebush Creek, flows into Schoharie Creek south of Sloansville.
Several important roads pass through Esperance. U.S. Route 20 runs east to west across the town. New York State Route 30A is a north-south road that crosses US-20 in a place called Sloansville. New York State Route 162 also meets NY-30A near Dwelly Corners.

Communities and Places in Esperance
The Town of Esperance has several smaller communities and important locations:
- Central Bridge – This is a small community mostly located in the neighboring town of Schoharie. It is on NY-30A at the southern edge of Esperance.
- Dwelly Corners – You can find this community north of Sloansville on County Road 35.
- Esperance – This is the main village of the town. It is located near the eastern border on US-20, close to the Schoharie Creek.
- Rockwell Corners – This spot is at the northern border of the town on County Road 44.
- Schoharie Junction – This community is in the southern part of the town on County Road 70.
- Sloansville – This community is west of Esperance village. It is located where US-20 and NY-30A meet. People first settled here around 1756.
