History of Estill Springs

How Estill Springs Began

Long ago, the Cherokee people knew about the special mineral springs in this area. Before them, different groups of indigenous peoples lived here for thousands of years.

The town of Estill Springs started around 1840. The Frank Estill family owned a lot of land here. They gave land for a new railroad to be built. People believed that drinking and bathing in mineral water was good for their health. Because of the springs and the easy train access, Estill Springs became a small spa town. It was named after the springs and the Estill family. Oscar Meyer was the first mayor of the town.

Estill Springs During the Civil War

During the Civil War, the town was often called "Allisonia." This name came from another family who lived in the area. Estill Springs was home to a training camp for Confederate soldiers called Camp Harris. It was named after Isham G. Harris, who was the governor of Tennessee for the Confederacy. He was from Franklin County.

In 1863, Southern forces moved through the town during the Tullahoma campaign. This campaign was named after a nearby town that was the Confederate headquarters.

From Spa Town to Modern Day

Over time, the idea of using spring waters for health became less popular. Some local stories say that when U.S. Route 41A was built through the town in 1940, the springs dried up. By the mid-1900s, the spa hotels were torn down.

The new highway helped connect Estill Springs to jobs in nearby towns. It also gave the town an important spot on the main road between Nashville and Chattanooga. Later, the Tennessee Valley Authority built lakes nearby, which brought more visitors for fun activities.

During the time of Prohibition, when alcohol was illegal, Estill Springs had a well-known local figure named Parker Jones. He was involved in illegal alcohol sales. Jones stayed in Estill for several years. He had a lot of influence over local leaders and police. The government sent many agents to arrest him. However, when they found his hiding place, he was gone. Parker Jones was never seen in Estill again.

The "Yellowhammer's Nest" was a famous house in Estill Springs. It belonged to the well-known Tennessee writer Will Allen Dromgoole. This historic home was sadly destroyed by fire in 1972.
