Etten-Leur is a town and municipality in the Netherlands, located in the province of North Brabant. Its name comes from two older villages, Etten and Leur, which grew together over time.

History of Etten-Leur

The areas of Etten and Leur have always been part of one local government. It was first called "Etten c.a." (which means "Etten and its surroundings"). Later, the name changed to "Etten en Leur". The current name, Etten-Leur, was officially adopted in 1968. By this time, the two villages had grown so much that they became one town.

Early Beginnings and Growth

Both villages started in the Middle Ages. They were quite successful during the time of the Dutch Republic. The only difficult period was during the Eighty Years' War, when many battles happened in the area.

Etten became important because it was a center for making peat. Peat is a type of fuel made from decayed plants. Leur was a busy trading port because it had a harbor.

Challenges and New Growth

During the 1800s, both villages became less important economically. In 1836, Arnold Damen left Leur to become a missionary in the United States. The famous painter Vincent van Gogh lived in Etten for a short time. He is the most well-known person from the history of Etten and Leur.

During World War II, American soldiers from the 104th Infantry Division helped free the villages from German control in late October 1944.

The economic problems ended in 1950. The Dutch government decided to help the town grow its population and industries. Because of this plan, Etten and Leur grew closer and finally merged into the single town we know today as Etten-Leur.
