History of Eustace
Eustace has an interesting past with some notable events. From movie filming to natural events, the city has seen many changes over the years.
Filming Fire From Below
In November 2007, a movie called Fire from Below was filmed in Eustace. The film crew was led by actor and producer Andrew Stevens. Famous actors like Kevin Sorbo from Hercules and Burton Gilliam from Blazing Saddles were part of the cast.
Many places in Eustace were used for the movie. These included a local restaurant and a gazebo in the town square. A nearby private lake was also used. Some people who live in Eustace even got to be extras in the film! The movie kept "Eustace" as the name of the town in the story. Fire from Below was released in 2009.
The 2017 Tornado
On April 29, 2017, a very strong tornado hit Eustace. This tornado caused a lot of damage in the city. It then moved towards West Canton, causing more serious damage there.
The 2021 Gas Leak
On November 12, 2021, a gas leak happened in Eustace. This leak was caused by stress on a gas line. Many residents noticed a strange smell in the morning. Later that day, the mayor was told it was a leak of a toxic gas.
Because of the leak, many people had to leave their homes. They went to nearby towns like Athens and Mabank for safety. Early the next morning, the mayor announced that the situation was under control. Residents could then return to Eustace.
Geography of Eustace
Eustace is located in the northwestern part of Henderson County. U.S. Route 175 goes right through the middle of the town. This road leads southeast about 11 miles (18 km) to Athens, which is the main city of the county. It also leads northwest about 7 miles (11 km) to Mabank.
The United States Census Bureau says that Eustace covers a total area of about 2.9 square miles (7.6 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
