Eutin's History
The name Eutin comes from an old Slavic word. Its exact meaning isn't clear, but it might come from a person's name, "Uta." Around the 700s and 800s AD, a Slavic tribe called the Obotrites settled in this part of Germany. They built a castle on an island in the lake now known as the Großer Eutiner See. This island is called Pheasant Island today.
In the 1100s, settlers from the Netherlands came to live in Eutin. By 1156, Eutin became a market town, which meant it was an important place for trading goods. Later, it became the home of the Prince-Bishopric of Lübeck. This was because Lübeck itself was a special "free city" that ruled itself.
In 1803, the bishopric changed, and Eutin became part of the Duchy of Oldenburg. A duchy was an area ruled by a duke. In 1937, a law called the Greater Hamburg Act moved Eutin. It went from being part of Oldenburg to being part of Prussia's Province of Schleswig-Holstein. After World War II, Eutin became part of the modern German state, or Bundesland, of Schleswig-Holstein.
Culture and Festivals
Eutin is famous as the birthplace of a well-known composer named Carl Maria von Weber. To honor him, an outdoor theater was built in 1951. It's located in the park of Eutin Castle.
Every July and August, this open-air theater hosts the Eutin Opera Summer Festival. Here, you can watch operas performed under the stars. The theater can hold about 2000 people. Students from Eutin and from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, USA, often take part in the festival. Lawrence is a "twin city" with Eutin.
Eutin also has a yearly Blues Festival at the start of summer. This three-day outdoor event brings together local musicians and new blues artists from all over the world. It takes place in the main market square in the center of town. The best part is that admission is free!
Geography and Economy
Eutin is surrounded by beautiful lakes in a region called the Holsteinische Schweiz. Some of these lakes include the Großer Eutiner See, Kleiner Eutiner See, Kellersee, and Ukleisee. Thick forests grow around these lakes. People love to go boating, canoeing, rowing, swimming, and fishing on these waters.
The area around Eutin, especially in Schleswig-Holstein, has many fields of rapeseed. This plant is used to make biofuel, which is a type of fuel made from plants. You'll also see many wind turbines in this countryside. They help produce clean energy.
Twin Towns
Eutin has "twin towns" or "sister cities" in other places. This means they have special friendships and often exchange students or ideas.
Eutin is twinned with:
Nykøbing Falster, Denmark
Putbus auf Rügen, Germany
Lawrence, Kansas, USA
Every summer, students from Lawrence, Kansas, visit Eutin for a few weeks. In return, German students from Eutin travel to Lawrence to study. The University of Kansas also has an internship program with Eutin, allowing students to gain work experience.
