Growing Up and School

Eva Chen was born in Taichung, Taiwan, in 1959. When she was young, her house had a fire because of telephone wires. This made her scared of telephones for many years.

She went to National Chengchi University in Taipei. There, she studied philosophy. After college, she worked for a short time in publishing books and magazines.

In 1984, Eva moved to the United States. She earned a master's degree in management information systems from the University of Texas at Dallas. Later, she worked for Acer Inc. in Taiwan before becoming a writer for a Chinese newspaper.

Building a Tech Company

In 1988, Eva Chen helped start Trend Micro. She founded the company with her brother-in-law, Steve Chang, and her sister, Jenny.

Eva was an executive vice president at Trend Micro. In 1996, she became the company's chief technology officer (CTO). As CTO, she helped create a special system called the Network VirusWall. This system helped protect computer networks from viruses.

In 2005, Eva Chen became the CEO of Trend Micro. Under her leadership, the company changed its focus. They moved from just making antivirus software to protecting data in the "cloud." Cloud protection means keeping information safe when it's stored online, not just on your computer.

Trend Micro bought other companies to help with this new focus. They bought Third Brigade in 2009 and cloud storage service humyo in 2010. In 2012, Eva received an award for her important work in cloud security in Asia.
