Becoming a Writer
Eva García Sáenz de Urturi was born in Vitoria-Gasteiz in 1972. When she was fifteen, she moved to Alicante, where she still lives. Her journey into writing started early. At just fourteen, her literature teacher suggested she keep a diary. This simple idea helped her begin her writing career.
Before becoming a full-time writer, Eva studied Optics and Optometry. She worked as an optician and optometrist for a large company. Later, she even worked at the University of Alicante. Even while working, she always loved books and writing. She won several awards for her early stories.
First Novels and Series
Eva spent three years researching and writing her first novel. It was published in 2012 and called La vieja familia, which means The Immortal Collection. This book was the first part of a two-book series. The series is known as La saga de los longevos, or A Saga of the Ancient Family.
In 2014, she released the second book in this series. It was titled Los hijos de Adán, meaning The Sons of Adam. That same year, she also published a separate historical novel. This book was called Pasaje a Tahití, or Passage to Tahiti. Both books were very popular with readers.
The White City Trilogy
In 2016, Eva published a crime novel titled El silencio de la ciudad blanca. This means The Silence of the White City. The story takes place in her hometown of Vitoria-Gasteiz. This book quickly became a huge international bestseller. Fans of the book even called themselves "krakenianos".
Because the book was so popular, thousands of readers visited Vitoria-Gasteiz. They wanted to see the real places mentioned in the book. The city of Vitoria-Gasteiz and the Basque Government even created special tours. These tours showed off the locations from the novel. This book was the start of her famous Trilogía de la ciudad blanca, or White City Trilogy.
To make her crime novels feel real, Eva did a lot of research. She even took courses at a police academy. She learned about things like inspecting crime scenes and developing fingerprints. She wanted her stories to be believable but not too gory. She aimed for an "elegant" crime story without too much blood.
The second book in the White City Trilogy came out in 2017. It was named Los ritos del agua, or The Water Rituals. The final book in the trilogy was released in 2018. It was called Los señores del tiempo, meaning The Lords of Time. This series has sold over one million copies. This makes Eva one of the most successful writers in Spain.
In 2019, the first book was made into a film. The movie was also called El silencio de la ciudad blanca. It is known in English as Twin Murders: The Silence of the White City. Famous actors like Belén Rueda and Javier Rey starred in the film.
